Stick with the steak. I have been to a lot of the iconic steak houses in Portland, i.e., Ringside, El Gaucho, etc. and was excited to try Morton’s. My first slight irritation was that we were not acknowledged for the first 10-15 minutes after we arrived. Probably my worst mistake was to order a seafood dish at a steak house. I ordered the stuffed prawns and my husband ordered a steak (don’t remember which type of steak). Anything outside of the entree is an additional cost for a side dish (on average $13). We went with asparagus and sour cream mashed potatoes. My husband’s steak was amazing! My $38 order of five prawns was dry and very disappointing. The saving grace with the entree was the small side on the plate, of pasta with a fabulous creamy sauce. At this price point for entrees, regardless of whether it was a steak house or not, the prawns should have been so much more. If you can’t properly prepare seafood, don’t put it on the menu. My friend also ordered the seafood sampler and it looked as dismal as mine. Now… let’s talk about the side dishes. The asparagus was soft and mushy and very disappointing. The mashed potatoes were very watery in consistency – if you added a bit of cream it would have been reminiscent of potato soup without seasoning. Overall, I was extremely disappointed by the quality of this supposed iconic Portland steak house. I truly wanted to love this place but there were too many issues with the taste and preparation of the dishes. Thumbs down….
Wonderful wait staff and delectable food!. We arrived a full half hour prior to our reservation, expecting to spend some time in the bar while waiting. Wrong…..they seated us immediately! We had a wonderful booth in the corner which was nice so we could visit. The staff was very attentive and accommodating. Our server, Eric, was very patient with our many questions and quite helpful with our efforts to decide. We had the attention of several wait staff, as well as the manager. Three of us had the filet mignon which was excellent, so tender and flavorful! The fourth party enjoyed the Rib Eye steak, which he felt was perfectly grilled. The sides we ordered were perfectly prepared and large enough to share and the homemade bread was delightful and plentiful! My martini was also delightful, the best I’ve ever had. All in all, we left very full and very happy!
Consistently great steaks – and more importantly the sides are always good. What’s better – they have a fantastic happy hour including a $7 quad slider steak sandwich.
The best of Portland!. I have eaten at many fine, local steakhouse (Ringside, Ruth Chris, Portland City Bar and Grill, etc) and Morton’s is by far my favorite. The dining area is wonderful, with dark wood, dim lighting, and an excellent selection of music. The dishes I have ordered here (bone in rib-eye being the best) were cooked to perfection. The wine list was very good, but would be my only real critique. It was lacking in a few areas, specifically reds. However, the server offered suggestions for pairings when my favorite wine was not available. His suggestion was amazing and complimented my steak well. The server we were graced with was beyond top notch. His knowledge of the cuts of beef alone was astounding. He was gracious, knowledgeable, intelligent, and present at the right times and in the right amounts. His service took the meal from amazing to phenomenal. The presentation, food, and ambiance are well worth the price tag.
Pricey but very good. Normally this place is not in our budget, but we splurged and we were treated like royalty while we were served the best steaks ever. A+++ on service and quality.
Disappointed. To begin with the service was weak. I had to ask for the waitress because we just sat there for five minutes without anything. Then the meat was not cooked as ordered – it was overcooked. The filets were not as good as Ruth’s Chris (last week) or previous visits. The asparagus were huge and tasteless as was the hollandaise sauce which was also watery. The scallops were wonderful and the crab cakes were ok.The desserts were very good, key lime pie, chocolate cake and creme brule. There was a very loud drunk who disrupted the restaurant the entire time we were there. All in all, it was not the Morton’s past experiences and as a result, we will not go back, nor recommend it.
