The restaurant sits a couple of blocks from Pioneer Square yet somehow it’s void of the throng of tourists other establishments nearby suffer from. The space is huge and has very high ceilings. The decor is phenomenal, a combination of 1920s hotel elegance with a touch of French art. The location used to be a hotel a century ago.The food is plated beautifully and is ridiculously savory. All the ingredients on each dish have a purpose, and they have some items on the menu with a lot of ingredients. I particularly enjoyed the pork chop. It was juicy, cooked perfectly (both inside and out), and was well-balanced with the burnt corn and quinoa. The jalapeo sauce was a nice surprise. Our large group ordered almost everything on the menu and there were no complaints. The dessert was gigantic. It claimed to feed two. Well, it fed five and we still took half of it home. The problem is with the front of the house. The greater missed us. The wait staff was absent minded half of the time. They had their moments, but we’re generally bad at their job.The mixed drinks were strong but flavorful. The wine was predominantly bad. I’d love to see wine pairings with the food, but they’d have to overhaul their wine list and hire a professional wine consultant for that.
What a great surprise to find another restaurant in the heart of downtown that serves very tasty and well prepared food. I had the soup special, Watermelon Gazpacho that was very refreshing and one of the best gazpacho soups I have tasted. I could have eaten bowls of this soup. I am sure the fact that melons are in season only added to the great flavors. I had meatloaf for an entrees that was topped with a tomato jam. This made the dish unique and exceptional. I got to taste their S’more Cake for desert and it was beautiful, tasty and like a s’more on steroids with the moist chocolate cake and the thick marshmallow sauce. Our server was great and the service was very quick which was perfect since we were planning to see a movie. We will definitely be returning.
I went to the Picnic House during a food walking tour. It has a great atmosphere, the centerpiece of which is this huge wooden table in the middle of the room made from a real tree. Story goes that the tree fell in the woods decades ago, but it wasn’t until recently that it was accessible. The owners snagged it and made a big picnic table for guests to enjoy. It was a great place to enjoy our salad made with mixed greens, beets, oranges, and goat cheese rolled in candied nuts. It was lightly mixed with an herb dressing and was very refreshing. It was a great first plate to what will be a fabulous food tour. goodnomadventures.com
