I was really hoping this place would shine… Because I love seafood so much. We had the mussels with fries and although the mussels were soft and juicy, I found disharmony between the fries and the mussels. I took solace in the fact that Cioppino was on the way. However, the Cioppino was overpowered by the mass of onions in the dish and had an overall acidic or pickled taste to it. The fish in the Cioppino was complementary and not to dry. I was hoping for a little more freshness in the flavor of the mussels and crab. We also had the lamb ragout, which seemed dry and not as creamy as it could have been. It was also a bit salty for our taste. The best dish was the monk fish, which was cooked well and the salt balanced delicately with the fish’s own natural flavor. The contrast with the slightly bitter kale and the texture of the faro was delightful. If your looking for a San Fran style Cioppino you won’t find it here.
Not what I expected!. Well, I took my wife out this evening for our fifth trip to Cabezon and unfortunately it appeared to be a lackluster performance by the staff – chef and server on this night. The evening started with a less than friendly server who appeared impatient as I tried to make my final decision on my entre after my wife quickly stated hers. Next was the bread, two pieces which were not much larger than small squares and the server did not return to ask whether we wanted more and also did not return to refill our water glasses. I generally do not write reviews, but because I work with the public in my job, I put my public service customer service face on daily regardless of the mood I may be in and try to provide service that I would want to receive if I were in my customer’s shoes. When our entrees arrived I was hopeful that the meal would make up for the previous shortcomings unfortunately my wife’s sturgeon’s accompanying vegetables were undercooked and hard and my strip steak’s accompanying mushrooms were almost non-existent. I know everyone has an off night, but it appeared the team at Cabazon on this night was out of sync as they didn’t appear to even acknowledge one another. Here’s hoping that on my next trip we will feel the positive vibe, receive the great service, and indulge in the wonderful food that has been my experience on my previous trips to Cabazon!
