Good, Cheap Tacos. Viva el Northside! If you find yourself on Portand Road and need a cheap taco fix, try this place. Mi amigo Chuck got it right. There is a nice selection of meats to choose from and it’s all made fresh right here. I especially liked the carnitas taco (roast pork) which was fresh and juicy. My dining partner liked the lengua (tongue) taco best. They also have asada (grilled pork) and pastor (spicy pork) and tripe. Even though they advertised ceviche tostadas on the menu, they didn’t have any ceviche today. They have a good selection of meats to go (this is meat market). Today they had longaniza, a Mexican sausage, and cecina seca, dried beef made in house. You don’t see that at most Mexican meat markets in Salem. This place reminds me of La Concentida on Lancaster which also has excellent carnitas tacos. No homemade tortillas but they give you two with your taco which you need to hold all the meat they give you here. The lady serving us was very nice and helpful and the place is really clean. Try it.

Does it seem I’m in a rut?. I have become something of a junkie for authentic Mexican food. When I learn of a new place where a nuanced version of the stuff may be found, I begin to experience the sensation of little insects crawling up my back, which doesn’t subside until I’ve tried the place. So it was with Carniceria Y Taqueria El Rodeo. My bride is a sport, so off we went today. SWMBO had a Taco de Lengua and a Taco de Tripa. (Unlike the Stomach lining, or Honeycomb, Tripe you may be familiar with, as used in the traditional Mexican Soup Menudo, small Intestines are used in these delicious Tacos.) I had a Chicken Quesadilla. It was huge and stuffed with grilled Chicken Meat, Cheeses and a Sauce that had the consistency, color and flavor of a very mild Chili Oil. It was served with Tomato, a large Lime wedge, a dollop of Sour Cream and of an Avocado. Carol’s Tacos were double wrapped with dainty Corn Tortillas and were generously filled with Meats, Cilantro and Onions. Excellent red and green Salsas were provided. She let me sample each and they were both fantastic. We shared a Mexican Coca-Cola, which contains more processed Sugar than four people should consume at one sitting, but it was oh so good! Wonderful as my Quesadilla was, I could not finish it all. As the full name suggests, their main focus is the Meat Market. Everything in the cases looked fresh and appealing. It’s also worthy of mention that there is a Mexican Bakery right next door. But that’s a tantalizing tale for another day!
