This is my go to Mexican place. It’s a bit dumpy to look at, but the food is terrific. Fresh pickled carrots, onions and jalapenos. Home made tomatillo salsa that is amazing and home made tortillas. This is a must for anyone looking for a delicious, authentic Mexican meal.

I also like to add that I have waited more than 15-30 min on orders and they still get it wrong. I’ve worked in the restaurant business for 3 years and that is completely wrong and unacceptable. Won’t be going again. I would rather buy from the taco trucks than at this place.12 Oct, 2013Decent food.. However, horrible customer service and rude employees. They have messed up on my orders too many times and they are always reluctant to fix it while being rude about it. That is the only fault about this place.

My favorite. Years ago (14) I worked up the street and that was my favorite place to grab lunch. I only get it once every couple years now since I moved back to Portland, but hey have the best carne asada ever and its still just the same. Its not fancy, its a bit grimy, but its busy and its busy because its bomb.

Skip the Juevos Rancheros. We were going to go to El Turbo for breakfast today but it was closed. It’s too bad there aren’t more options for a Mexican breakfast in Salem at 9 am on a Saturday morning. So we headed north to El Gruellense on Portland Rd. The place is undergoing a renovation and looks a little disheveled. Most of the other patrons were having big bowls of menudo. Maybe trying to cure a hangover? I’ve never been a big menudo fan. The choices for a Mexican breakfast appeared to be Juevos Rancheros. Juevos Estrellas (?) or a breakfast burrito. We opted for the Rancheros, eggs over easy. When they arrived the eggs were barely cooked, swimming in a watery salsa that wasn’t very picante. Usually the eggs come atop a crisp corn tortilla. No tortilla. At least we got some pretty good corn tortillas on the side that appeared to be homemade. But overall this was disappointing. Juniors Tacqueria has much better Juevos Rancheros at a somewhat higher price though they tend to go a little heavy on the salt. But they don’t open until 10.The search for an early Mexican breakfast in Salem will continue.

The first thing I noticed was…… Of the 25 or 30 people eating here, I was the only Gringo! Reasoning that since these folks know more about Mexican food than I could ever hope to, I had probably found some great food. Was I right? OH YEAH! I ordered their Carne Asada lunch mentally picturing a couple of double soft corn tortillas with the savory citrus marinated, shredded beef inside, beans and rice. I noticed the price was $8.25 which I though was a little steep but still, I kept and open mind. The counter person asked me if I wanted tortillas. I told her yes and immediately the young lady next to her started putting dough balls in the press. Talk about fresh! From prep to plate was less than a minute. I got my number and seated myself at a window table (which had not been wiped). I picked up my meal at the counter when called. The platter had a huge slab of beef topped with a deliciously mild grilled green pepper and grilled whole green onions plus beans, rice and chilled lettuce salad. It was fantastic! Oh, the tortillas mentioned earlier, there were four of them! (Note: they had no menu that I could take, nor did the counter person know what their hours are.) If you like authentic Mexican chow, try this place.9/16/10 Today I tried their Pollo Asada lunch. Half a delicious chicken with beans, rice and fresh four tortillas. Fantastic. It was a lot like Jamaican Jerk Chicken, which I love and is hard to find here!
