Delicious. Worth the extra money. Friendly staff. Get a michelada if you haven’t tried one. They are good for all occasions and I would have to say this is the best one in Salem. The only one that competes with this one is a little bar in woodburn

Great authentic food. The food here is delicious. If you’re looking for ambiance above all else then pass. BUT if you want great food, great service and friendly people then this is your place. It’s a little hole in the wall with delicious food. Everything we have tried without exception has been delicious. The tacos are traditional and made with your choice of meat. Burritos are very good and definitely shareable. I love how they grill them. Their flan is the absolute best. I recommend you put your order for flan in before your main course so you can try to ensure you get some – they sell out quickly.

Best food I’ve eaten in years!. Having grown up near Los Angeles, I have come to miss the excellent Mexican food of my childhood since moving to rural Oregon. Today I found this hidden gem of a restaurant. I got the best chicken enchiladas I have ever eaten. My husband’s carne asada was absolutely amazing. It was everything we’ve been missing.

Nice, casual mexican food.. We went there as a family and everyone loved their food. It’s very inexpensive and clean inside. The staff were friendly. Will definitely be returning.

Best Mole and Mixiote in Town. I have eaten here twice in the past week and have decided La Fondita has some of the best Mexican food in Salem. The mole Oaxaqueno (served with chicken) is made from scratch from a family recipe. You’ve got to try it. There is a lot of mediocre to bad mole out there, usually because it is not made from scratch. This dish is a revelation if you’ve never had really good mole. The other specialty here is mixiote — meat cooked with spices and cactus leaves (nopales) in parchment paper. They have chicken mixiote every day and lamb mixiote (borrego) on the weekends. The flavor is amazing. The handmade corn tortillas here are also really special. You are missing out on some outstanding authentic Mexican food if you haven’t made it to La Fondita.27 Jul, 2012Interesting Menu — Give it a Try. This location has had a succession of Mexican restaurants that have not made it. It’s easy to drive by and not see it, even though it is at a fairly major intersection (Center and Hawthorne). Most recently it was Habanero, and the original owners served really good Guererro-style food. I was very sorry to see it close. La Fondita is run by a nice family. I believe Dad is the cook and the kids are the wait staff. The menu is interesting. Not your run of the mill Salem Mexican. For my first lunch here I had the quesadilla with squash blossoms (flor de calabaza). It’s something I haven’t seen on a Salem menu before, so I wanted to try it. It was good. The tortilla was handmade and the vegetarian filling was tasty. On the weekends this place has green pozole, birria de chivo (goat) and borrego (lamb). Another interesting thing on the menu is mixiote de pollo, a Mexico City specialty of braised spicy chicken and cactus (nopales). I want to come back and give it a try sometime. Check this place out and give this nice family a chance to make it in the restaurant business.
