The Place to Go for Tacos. There are lots of choices for authentic Mexican food in Salem, but a recent visit to Salvador’s brought home the fact that if it’s tacos you want, Salvador’s might be your best bet. Why? In the first place, they give you a choice of 9 different meats. Because they have a meat market on premises, they can offer a wide choice including some uncommon meats like buche (pork cheek) and cabeza (beef head meat). Their chicharron con carne is really delicious — pork with the crispy skin left on. Gives the tacos a nice crunch. The tacos come on handmade corn tortillas — full size, not the little ones. Then there is the salsa bar which offers seven different fresh made salsas and other condiments for your tacos. They cost $1.89 each, a bit higher than at other taquerias, but for the quality, it’s worth it.04 Jul, 2010Some of the Best Mexican Food in Salem. I love Salvador’s. It’s so much more than a bakery. For years I have been getting their pork tamales to go … delicious and full of big chunks of pork, not the mystery meat you find in some tamales. Take home a dozen and keep them in the fridge and heat in the microwave. Another specialty are the tres leches cakes. Wonderful, and made right there I believe. Their tacos and tortas are first rate and you can add your own choice of salsa from the extensive salsa bar. Try the orange colored ancho chili salsa for a real treat. Salem is lucky to have such a great place to get real Mexican food! Try it.

This is the real deal people!. I can’t believe it’s been a year and a half since I’ve been to this great place.I had two Carnitas Tacos and one Carne Asada Taco today. When the pleasant young lady delivered my order to the table and I saw those loaded hecho a mano melt-in-your-mouth Tortillas my mind flashed back to previous joyous visits. I made my way to their incredibly stocked condiment bar and loaded up with Salsa Verde, Radish Slices, Copped Onion, Lime Wedges, Raw Shredded Cabbage and some fiery Pickled Green Chili Strips that I have no idea what were but were wonderful. Both Meats were the best of their kind. What a feast! Only a fit of good sense prevented me from running to the counter and ordering three more.25 Aug, 2010Muy sabroso!. I wanted to try the Taco Truck Amecameca reviewed yesterday. (If you’ve noticed I seem to follow this guy around, it’s only because I’ve found it to be a sure-fire method of finding new, interesting an authentic Mex chow!) I drove all the way across town only to find it is closed on Wednesdays! As Salvador’s is half a block away, all was not lost. Today I had the quesadilla de pollo. It was fantastic, which is what I have come to expect here. They have a selection of pastries and baked goods which would tempt a stoic. Hardly qualifying as the latter, I quickly succumbed to a gingerbread cookie marginally smaller than a Mariachi’s sombrero. A mistake no doubt, albeit a delicious one! If you haven’t tried this place, you should.9/3/10 Update: Today I had Carne Asada Tacos. Fantastic! My only gripe is this place is all the way across town. (But it’s always worth the drive.)10/19/10 Update: Just had to share this place. Took my pal George Grabenhorst here for lunch today. He is every bit as bowled over by Salvador’s as I am!07 May, 2010Asada increble de carne!!!!!. When the carne asada craving overwhelms me, I usually find one of the mobile taco trucks that exist in profusion in Salem. They are nearly always good. Today, in response to several glowing reports on another review site, I drove over to Salvador’s. It’s an order-at-the-counter place. They bring you the fresh, soft corn tortillas (I think they make them on the premises) with the citrusy marinated beef filling. Then you go to a condiment bar containing various salsas, cilantro, sliced radishes, chopped onion, chilies, lime wedges and other things too numerous for my overtaxed memory to recall. Most places skimp on these ingredients, especially the cilantro. They also have a huge display of Mexican pastries and a fresh meat section both of which looked very good. Their food is not your Americanized Mexican restaurant fare. Give them a try. I suspect you will be as pleased as I was.

Oh yeah!. I guess I forgot to review this place. I remember getting their tortas (couldn’t tell you what kind) when I was growing up; my mom would frequently pick up dinner from Salvador’s on her way home from work. Nothing but the fondest of memories.Fast forward something like 10-12 years, and Salvador’s is still around. Awesome! My partner came back from a Summer backpacking trip through parts of Central and South America and wanted some nice, authentic food, but had no idea where to go. Out-of-towner and all of that. My first thought: Salvador’s! We stopped by and both got their vegetarian burrito (which I think they said had more than just beans, rice, and cheese, but it didn’t – not that I care, because honestly, that’s all I wanted). The burrito was, of course, excellent, and was met with solid approval from my companion. It helps that they have an absolutely killer sides bar (6 or 8 salsas, limes, radishes, the whole shebang). Good prices, too. I can’t really vouch for their pastries or the deli in the back, but I would be surprised if they weren’t good.
