Delivery Bust. Called in to order delivery (since they seem to be the ONLY chinese delivery in all of Salem), food couldn’t be delivered til after 4pm. Once received, the Bobo platter had overcooked fried shrimp mush, instead of paper wrapped chicken, it was burnt cabbage roles (no trace of chicken) along with other assortments of burnt and over cooked fried nasties. On to the main course and received this time undercooked fried rice and a combination of what appeared to be left over BBQ pork, shrimp bits and chicken slices mixed with some random vegetables. Everything came greasy and distasteful, as well as overcooked or undercooked. Will not be ordering from here again…despite the convenience factor.
Best Dimsum in Salem…. Errr, the only dim sum in Salem. A few weeks ago I was up in Portland on business at around 7 in the A.M. I hate going up to P-town that early because there are no Chinese places open. With a heavy heart I passed dimsum joint after dimsum joint on 82nd as I headed south back to the A L B. By the time I reached Salem I lamented my decision of not hanging around Portland until Wong Kings Seafood or HK Caf opened. I turned off I-5, found a place to park, and checked my favorite restaurant review site for some good Chinese. It appears that The Hong Kong House is the only place in Salem that offers dimsum! Being from Albany, another place that is void of dimsum along with its counter parts Corvallis and Lebanon, I saw that this was my last shot to nab these Chinese small dishes. I sat in there parking lot for about 45 minutes, like some creeper, waiting for them to open. When the open sign flickered on I was at the front door in a flash. The outside of HK House would not win any beauty pageants, In fact, it is in dire need of paint. The inside transports you back to the 1960s and resembles the Restaurant in the Bruce Lee classic Way of the Dragon, it was kind of nice in a way. I plopped down in one of the big booths and ordered up Salt and Pepper Squid, Shrimp Balls, Pork Sui Mai, Pork Bao, and Pot Stickers. After about 15 minutes my dishes arrived. The small dishes were good; not the best, but good. What made them even better was the $2.50 price tag on each. The Salt and Pepper Squid was the star of the show. Lightly breaded squid, onion, and jalapeo slices were expertly cooked and rocketed to the top of my Salt and Pepper Squid list (the #1 spot being previously held by Dorios in Portland). All in all the food at this place was pretty good, the prices were fair, and the service was friendly. I suggest you give em a taste!
Good food. Went here for the first time, could never get past the ugly pink outside. But a friend said the food was worth it and the price is right so we tried it out. Went for the Singapore Pan Fried Noodles because Chuck said they are the best…..and he was right. This is more of an Indian dish to me, the curry is spicy and strong, the noodles were awesome and there was a good amount of protein as well. A dry dish, don’t expect a saucy noodle dish. Also tried the BBQ pork dim sum, pretty good, the sweetness went well with the curry. Total bill was 13 bucks and fed two people. Will try this place again!
Um, Well, Yeah, Okay. The exterior is a little — well, yucky. But the food and service is very good. Especially if you like dining with ants. 🙂 Love the Pook Eg Fu Yung!
Very good. It will be on top of out places to go when we want Chinese. The Orange Chicken was very good, and the spring rolls were some of the best.
