  My beloved crow’s nest is gone!. The place is undergoing a major remodel. My people watching perch was a casualty. They still have an area in the front of the store, with a fascinating view of the parking lot (yawn) where deli customers can devour their purchases but it’s just not the same.I got small portions of Curry Chicken Salad (rated a 2) and Brussel Sprout Salad (rated a 2), a couple of Fried Chicken Wings (rated a 3) and a Sushi Eel Roll (rated a 3). This snack set me back $14.91. Looks like their ridiculously high pricing philosophy has finally found its way to the once-reasonably-priced deli. Bummer! Gotta change my vote.10 Jul, 2012I’ve mentioned before………. That the only bargains to be had in this, otherwise pricey, store are in the Deli. I enjoyed three Broasted Chicken Wings in the crow’s nest today for $1.69! That’s actually cheaper than WINCO. Several years ago they changed their Breading recipe, so they are not as knock-out-yummy as they once were, but they’re still pretty darned good. And the crow’s nest is always a great place to people watch.29 Apr, 2011Deli Sandwich Fix!. Stopped in again today for a Corned Beef, Swiss, Pickle, Lettuce, Onion with Thousand Island Dressing on Rye Sandwich and a relaxing interlude in the secret crows nest. This was an almost unheard of disappointment! The Meat was tough, stringy and dry. Reasoning that even Boar’s Head can produce a less than perfect cut occasionally, and I’d had hundreds of very good sandwiches here over the course of 30+ years, I ate it and decided not to complain. As luck would have it, the fellow that made my sandwich came into the balcony on a break. He asked me how my sandwich was. I told him. He said to remind him next time I stopped by for lunch and he would build me another one as a courtesy from Roth’s. This is kind of service is why the Roth’s stores enjoy the loyal following they do.16 Jan, 2011I have extolled the virtues… Of this place before, I know. But get this! Today I had a hot Reuben Sandwich made with Boar’s Head Corned Beef, Boar’s Head Swiss Cheese, and well drained Kraut on Marbled Rye Bread for $3.99! This was a whole, not a half, big sandwich. How can they do that? I couldn’t buy those ingredients and make it at home for that.05 Dec, 2010My secret place… Not the deli, the balcony area where you can people watch while you eat. This perch overlooks Salem’s premier, high-end grocery store. People get dressed up to come here. It’s a social event for many of them. Although one usually pays a premium for the pampering and superb customer service, the deli sandwiches are unbelievable values. (Mine today was $5.49) Nearly all their meats and cheeses are Hogs Head brand. Their breads and fixin’s are very good. I had a Corned Beef and Swiss on Whole Wheat Sandwich today. (They were out of Rye, which is very unusual) The deli is usually busy, but for some reason, the mezzanine counter and tables have been largely undiscovered. I am often the only one there. What a great place to people watch Salem’s social and economic elite hobnob.14 May, 2010This is the deli section of Salem’s nicest grocery store.. It has a good selection of food and you can enjoy it in their mezzanine level eating area overlooking the store. A great people watching place!!!

  Try the Reuben. The Reuben sandwich is great, cheap, and hot off the grill. Also some of the best doughnuts in town
