I liked this place last time I was in…….. And was surprised to find, in checking my notes, that that visit was nearly three years ago.Top Dog is a sports bar which, at that time, had a pretty extensive Japanese/Teriyaki menu. They still serve Asian dishes but they’re now brought to us by Eng’s Garden which once was a separate Chinese restaurant on S. Commercial.Their lunch special today as General Tso’s Chicken for $6.99. That sounded good to me. It came in a tilted bowl with a scoop of Steamed Rice and the usual mix of Veggies in a milder than usual Sauce. One of the many things I like about Chinese food is that it usually doesn’t let you neglect your Vegetables. It was a decent rendition of the dish, for a sports bar, but not on a par with what I’d expect from a specialty Chinese restaurant. My server, Donni, was a little slow on the greeting but she was cheerful and friendly and otherwise did a fine job.Bottom line is it was an acceptable meal at a reasonable price.I’ll bet Top Dog is a fun place on game night.06 May, 2010I had surmised. By the number of cars in their parking lot, during the lunch hour, I had noticed on several occasions, that this place probably had something special going on. Today I tried it. It is a sports bar with myriad television sets on the walls, so I was expecting burgers, dogs and sandwiches to dominate the menu. They were present, of course, but to my delight, there was a sizable number of teriyaki offerings. I had a sesame chicken salad which was served with a wonderful dressing on the side. It looked like thousand islands but had a distinct teriyaki tang to it. Also, on the side was a cup of hot chili sauce which gave the sesame chicken a zesty punch. The server, it turns out, was one of my favorite cashiers at the WINCO store on S. Commercial. She was friendly and efficient. A great lunch in a convivial atmosphere! I recommend Top Dog.
