I have visited this wonderful restaurant many times now including a private dinner for 16 people. The kitchen was able to create vegan, gluten free, and omnivore options. The staff and manager are cheerful and happy to adapt to customers’ needs. I’m not generally a person who likes to try new foods but they won me over with the combination of tastes and appearances. The flat-iron steak and the silky tofu are the two photos.

Refreshingly different and upscale without being pretentious, Aviary delivers with out-of-the-ordinary Asian-fusion dishes and cocktails. Service is always good and the back seating area overlooks a pretty urban garden. Great happy hour spot for drinks and small plates. paperairplaneblog.com

Probably the best meal I have ever had! We started with the foie gras dumpling (amazing), the pork belly Katsu (melt in your mouth!) and the crab chawanmushi. The crab dish was very adventurous (culinarily speaking) with bone marrow and fresh Washington sea urchin – amazing! The NY steak was incredible – a perfect medium rare, tender, and amazing with the potato pure. The lamb was perfection- accompanied by charred tomatoes and chickpea fries. Amazing experience

Mothra Says…. Great Food Come Now!. Ill skip to the end: Michael said to me after dinner; Hey Mothra, cant you just cut to the chase and give a short review? If you could, what would it be Hmmm, How about: Great Food Come Now! Michael, I would like to stop there, but I wont.During Portland Dining Month in March, my brah Michael, K and I grabbed a reservation and headed over to Aviary on Alberta. For you owta-townas, this restaurant has one of Portlands best reputations. We parked in front on a Wednesday in late March and were seated immediately. After some menus and a round of Portlands finest, Lauren our server greeted us with a smile and welcomed us.I asked her about the menu and she took some time to go over it. We picked a bottle from the wine list: a sav blanc from NorCal and Lauren chilled it in a bath. It did not take long for the three of us to decide on a couple of hors d oeuvres: tempura green beans in a green curry and sesame salt sauce. This dish was prepared perfectly. The green beans were lightly battered, the beans were still crisp but hot to the touch, and the sauce was phenomenal. Wow, what a dish. I could have had nothing but this all night. But there was more. A plate of bigeye tuna tartar with heart of palm, long beans, tobiko, and candied cumin, then fresh greens on top. WHAT? Who does this? Who thinks of this? Amazing. The flavors were exquisite. The saltiness of the tartar, the texture was fantastic. The fresh greens paired well with the fish and the sauce on the bottom was creamy and delicious.OK, two home runs. Now what is next? Only at Aviary will I receive a bowl of chilled dungeness crab chawanmushi . Huh? I did not expect this. It is a creation of layered bone marrow, sea urchin, asian pear, snap peas, & truffle vinaigrette. You are not sure either are you? I grabbed my spoon and took a small corner of the layers down to the bottom of the dish. Woof! This was amazing. The flavors, about 5-6 different sensations and textures all at once. This is something that I had never seen before. Honestly, I enjoyed being surprised. It does not happen enough. I took my time savoring this dish of flavors. Well done. So, after this, what can we expect? Ks entre arrived: A grilled salmon, with crispy skin and tempura vegetables. Lovely. Me? My Beef short rib, with miso, taro root, yuzukosh slaw, & shiitake mushroom arrived. Wow! Now this was tender and really tasty. Only knock, a little small. The flavors were terrific. The three of us sat and dined in silence while we sipped my bottle of Chateau Souverain cab sav 2012. Nice. All three plates were clean. No leftovers this time. Lauren had to say is there room for dessert Well, yes there is and a coffee as well please. Normally I do not have dessert but I just had to know what the chef had in mind? How does Brown Butter Cake with Rubarb Compote sound to you? It was buttery good and rich as heck. The tartness of the rubarb reminded me that as a kid we used to pick it raw in the field and chew on it. What a fabulous and unexpected dinner. Will I be back? Try to keep me away. Great flavors, exciting menu, very good service, great dining experience. Mothra says… 4.20 of 5.0

Perfect for a casual evening. The food was great. Every course different. Sitting outside was quiet and pleasant. The service was perfect. Not pushy but very present. Highly recommended and the price was right.
