Maple Crueller And Cinnamon Crumb. Some of the best doughnuts in Portland. Fantastic selection and friendly staff.11 Jan, 2015Outstanding. Had a blueberry old fashioned and a buttermilk bar. Both were incredibly moist and have all of the good flavors you want in a doughnut. Can’t wait to go back and try other varieties. They are open until late at night and also serve ice cream. This is a Portland highlight and a must try if you love doughnuts.
Make a late night run. I have been to Tonallis three times. Twice I went at about 11:45 pm and the cases were fully stocked, the donuts fresh and delicious. I went at about 7:45pm another day and the cases were almost completely empty and they were out of some of my favorites. They did have one donut that I like, so I got two of them. When I got home and took my first couple bites I realized it was not cooked all the way and there was raw dough inside. So, if you’re gonna go (and it’s worth it), make it as late as possible. I believe they close at midnight.
No Contest. We compared Tonallis to Voodoo today – chocolate raise doughnuts. Swung by Tonallis and got a few doughnuts (had to ask if the chocolate bars were chocolate or maple because the chocolate was so light in color, I couldn’t tell). Then we took our little bag of doughnuts over to Voodoo Too on Davis. The line was so long, we decided to forgo the comparison and just enjoy our tasty treats in the car in the parking lot of the competition. After one bite, we just had to go get in that line (it was out the door)! The Tonallis doughnuts were not impressive – the chocolate hardly had any chocolate flavor and the doughnuts were almost stale tasting (this was about 3 in the afternoon), with not a lot of flavor. After waiting through the long line at Voodoo, we did a head to head comparison, and there truly was no contest. The Voodoo doughnuts were sweet and chocolaty, and just perfect! The Tonallis were weak tasting, and not at all satisfying.Tonallis might be an old standard in a great neighborhood (I really wanted to love them!), but I didn’t feel they were any better than Fred Meyer.
Can’t believe i’m reviewing doughnuts…tonallis makes a variety of olde-fashioned that are tough to beat.
Go to VD for the hype, come here for real doughnuts.. Sure, I’ll take all my visitors to VD downtown so they can giggle as they order and marvel at the wonder of bacon and maple. But after they leave, I’m getting my own doughnuts here. The secret is to go about an hour or so before they close (late night munchies time) to get the freshest batches. Their cruellers are lovely–eggy yet sweet, and the texture is spot-on. The buttermilk bars will blow your mind. The cake doughnuts are moist on the inside, crunchy on the outside. Even a plain glazed makes krispy kreme seem icky in comparison. In short, these are hands down the best doughnut in Portland, even without the hype.
