Simply The Best!!!. I have tried a lot of indian resturants, and I mean alot!!!! And this by far is always the best! They have never let me down! My husband and I have moved to Portland but we will be driving back here because honestly it’s the only place I trust any more!!!!

Absolutely awful. Do NOT go! Everything was burnt, greasy, and flavorless. Horrible.

We went for the 1st time tonight and enjoyed the food very much!!!The service was excellent, our waitress was very informative…she answered all of my nieces questions about the food. She always had a nice smile. She joked with us about the naan. If you would like toKnow what naan is, go eat at the India Palace in Salem, OR

It is Salem after all. I agree there is little to write home about, but come on, it is Salem. People want a quick, simple meal that fits in with their hour long lunch hour. At this place you get your food, you get to chat and you are out of there in a half hour leaving you to run some errands before returning to work. I thought the food was fine, and the service acceptable.

OK..but Kinda Plain. I admit that I have not been to India Palace since 1998, before I left for grad school. I remember the flavors being excellent but the portions being a tad bit stingy Now that I’m back in the area I decided to give it a go for lunch.First of all, I read the negative reviews here and decided to be on the lookout. The place was clean and everything was fine; no dirty plates or tables, no bugs, no nothing, so it looks like the owners have worked things out. I read their current health dept scores, which were lower than they had been for a while but the violations seemed fussy and minor, nothing gross at all, so I thought I’d check the place out. To be fair to the place, the bug issues that they had were a number of years ago, I didn’t see anything about bugs on their more recent scores.I chose the buffet, they served tandori chicken, Chicken Saag, and a vegetable curry in cream and a chickpea curry in a spicy sauce. The food was cooked to perfection but the flavor was missing. Where are the spices and herbs??? The tandori was cooked super well, tender and juicy but it just tasted like American BBQ chicken; where is the lemon and spices?? The Saag was rich tender and fresh but a good Saag should be swimming in cumin and cardomom of which there was only the slightest hint. The vegetable curries had no flavor at all, like chickpeas floating in canned tomato sauce. On the other hand the naan was super good as were the condiments like hot sauce, raita and the mint sauce. However Indian food is suppossed to explode with flavor, the naan should not be the highlight of the meal.As for the atmosphere, its cute and kitchy. I had to laugh at the old guy below complaining about incense-what is wrong with a little incense in an Indian eatery? The place does get crowded for lunch and one can get the feeling of being in a cattle herd but that is not the owners fault obviously. It might not be the best place to bring a business associate though LOL. For 6.50 you can get a large lunch to-go box and that is a good value, so I’ll probably be back sometime. Service was attentive.Maybe things are better at dinner, maybe they go easy on the spice for the buffet since they have to please the lowest common denomenator and this is Salem, god forbid there is any excitment. Maybe I’m just spoiled by the Bombay Cricket Club in PDX, but I found this place to be just ok.

Very good! My bf is from India and they do a really nice job!! We come at least 1x a month. Butter chicken is always good with their garlic naan! Give this place a try! Service could be improved – but good for a change of pace 🙂

Noon Buffet – interesting – Dinner, not so much. We’ve stopped by India Palace a few times over the years for noontime buffet. It has a limited although interesting selection of native India dishes + the usual buffet options from wholesale food companies. We agreed to have an evening dinner with a group of about 8 family members on a Saturday night. The restaurant at 5:30 to 7:00 pm was not busy. We made our orders from the menu – I asked the waitress for clarification about two different items – asking if each had rice on the plate. I did not understand what she said, so we ordered a side of rice to share between two. Once our order arrived we had way more rice than needed. I thought the wait staff could have been more hospitable and helpful – it seemed like we were on our own, despite questions about menu choice. Food quality was average at best – the chicken was overdone. I know, India Palace is a longtime downtown staple – but there is room for improvement.
