Have been here multiple times in the past year and this place never disappoints. It’s a true French bistro with meals prepared farm to table. There’s not more than 4 people working at any given time and they are hustling. Great wine selection. If you aren’t sure what wine to choose Chef Bernard will pair your meal perfectly. And the food? Outstanding. Anything on that menu will be very good. We’ve made this our go-to place.
Food not what expected. week at best. Wine selection was good the wine was excellent appetizer was amazing salad was great main chorus embarrassing brussel sprouts old potatoes let’s say there were to Dale brussel sprouts I West cause its good but I was embarrassed I would have been embarrassed just serve that vegetables with my buffalo steak not worth the visit and in a hurry our waiter was in a hurry rushing us through the whole evening not relaxing at all ouch also we were the only ones in the restaurant
LOVELY…please try. If I could figure out how to put really likes it, I would.. Lovely. I had the opportunity to finally try this hot spot, it’s been open for about 2 1/2 years, and I’m not sure how I’ve overlooked it til now. The restaurant is owned by a lovely couple. The chef is Frenchman Bernard. His food focuses on quality local ingredients. The menu changes daily, which you can see online. I’m told that this is to take advantage of the best and freshest local ingredients—-and to prevent the wonderful chef from getting bored. This means the menu is what it is, but frankly I think it encouraged me to order outside of the box, and I couldn’t be more pleased. I ordered the cheese plate for the appetizer. The cheeses were varied and for the most part delicious. I learned a lot about my personal preferences. The selection of the cheeses, however was great. I next had the lamb shank with couscous and peppers. It was truly the best lamb I’ve ever had. It was literally falling apart with a mere nudge of my fork. Melt in my mouth delicious. The flavors were fantastic, so rich and complex, hitting notes I hadn’t imagined. Seriously, I can’t even adequately describe them. But I whole heartily recommend it. The creme brle was smooth, with a crunchy crust that wasn’t burnt, just right. I asked Bernard for a wine pair to go with the lamb, he was spot on. I didn’t grab the name of the red, but it was an amazing pair. Bernard’s wife was lovely, I’m ashamed I didn’t catch her name. She was very knowledgeable and sweet. The beautiful couple is trying to bring a higher level of quality cuisine to Salem. I for one am all for it. I have no criticisms for the meal, it was perfect and the atmosphere was lovely. This hidden gem needs to be discovered more, even if it means that I have a hard time getting in. Support local gems so that we can keep them around.
Second time having dinner here last night and once again, left very pleased!!! I had the Lamb Shank, which was amazing! My friend had a dish I can’t remember the name of, but it was delicious as well. We started with the radish appetizer and two rounds of bread and butter.Dessert was creme brle and a dense chocolate custard.Of course the highlight of dinner was the conversation with Bernard, the owner who does it all! THANK YOU for bringing your talent back to Salem!!!
Salem is starved for restaurants and if you don’t go to fast food, chinese or mexican…you step up to an Applebees…….but, hidden away is a small restaurant called Crooked House Bistro. If not the best in Salem,,, so close. The appetizers, the salads, the entree, the dessert as good as anything I’ve ever eaten in NYC, Europe or Asia…. it was a fantastic dining experience. If you are concerned about the service, don’t be… outstanding. The owner’s son can make your evening and dad helps him out. It may be a little spendy but it is also so damn good you need to make the trek over the bridge to the Crooked House.
Brilliant!. Enjoyed a lovely dinner at The Crooked House Bistro with my son and daughter in August. We were moving my daughter into her college dorm the following day, and truly needed some R&R and great food/wine at the end of a college shopping day which had included a marathon IKEA experience. The Crooked House was perfect…not only was the food, wine and ambience wonderful, but the service was exemplary. My son who has since moved to Santiago, Chile is still Skyping about his scallops at the Crooked House, and the delightful sauce surrounding them!
Fantastic food, flawless execution, interesting, classic flavors. A gem in this gastronomic desert of a town.
