The Waitress Saved It!. I’m giving this one a thumbs up because the Waitress saved it. I stopped for lunch – I’m not a huge fan of Italian restaurants – only because Pittsburgh has more Italian restaurants Sicily, one more mediocre than the rest. But I am a fan of Italian FOOD, but finding the good stuff is harder than finding a needle in a haystack.House specialty – Veal Romano was good but average, the salad was salad, the side of pasta and sauce was good but average. The decor was average. It’s a nice place, but no better than most. I’m sure this will satisfy most people that visit here. The prices are not cheap, but the location dictates the price. All in all, it will keep most eaters happy – but I am looking for something to make me come back – there wasn’t anything – except the waitress. The waitress was very nice. The place was empty and she spent most of the time chatting with me – which I normally don’t care for. I didn’t catch her name, older lady with gray hair, great chatterbox! Very entertaining, very engaging, and very unassuming. She turned a mediocre Italian meal into a good time. A++ for the service. Definitely a B on the food score.
This place is foul! The employees look like inmates, and the owners like wardens. Over priced low end Italian food that you could make at home with more flavor and 75% cheaper
Serviceable food but much better elsewhere.. My significant other and I visited Carbonara’s last Sunday evening; we arrived at about 6 pm and there was already a line waiting to be seated. The waiting area is very, very small – officially one bench seat approximately six feet in length, so most of us stood in clumps trying to stay out of the way of the staff. I was told they get really busy around Lent, which is understandable as the majority of their dinner menu is chicken or fish. The few beef entries are in the form of veal. We were told the time to wait would be about 15-20 minutes – well over a half hour passed before the harried owner found us a place to sit. The food can best be described as serviceable but not fantastic. I ordered the chicken scallopini with a pasta side dish and Phil had the chicken alfredo; while the portion sizes were comfortably adequate and the dishes were served piping hot, there was a surprising blandness to the entrees. The alfredo sauce was rather tasteless, with no apparent seasonings; fortunately liberal doses of the grated Romano cheese present in shakers on the table added sufficient taste to the dish. My scallopini was advertised as being in a white wine sauce, and indeed it was – but the sauce was so delicate again as to be nearly devoid of flavor. Were it not for the addition of the vegetables (most notably the red and green peppers), this dish would also have been virtually tasteless. Again, adding liberal sprinkles of the grated romano helped with the flavor. My rotini pasta side dish with marinara sauce followed suit with the other offerings we’d ordered – also oddly bland. The salads were fairly plain and unimaginative, though the dressings were decent. The servers were extremely busy but managed to be attentive and friendly nonetheless, which was a decent saving grace. We haven’t written this place off the list entirely – we may choose to visit it again during a weekday since the weekend was so insane – but in all honesty, for the price of the food one can do MUCH better. Were we to visit again, I think we’d stick with the sandwich or pizza part of the menu.

BAD EXPERIENCE. Have been dining here for many years. Wonderful wait staff, always courteous, and fast, and always enjoyed the food, until……….today, ordered dinner, the chicken was chewy, tasted undercooked, very unappetizing. Told the waitress to take it back, and I said instead to replace with a pizza that I could eat later, as I had no more appetite. One of the owners’ approached my table, and I was thinking he was going to assure me that this was a single incident, and that he appreciated over 10 years of our business, but to the contrary, he did not believe me, and insinuated I was being dishonest, as all of the chicken served that night was the same. I was no longer upset about the meal, I was upset as to how I was treated. I did give back the chicken, and most certainly, they charged me for the pizza. I just opened the box of pizza, without a concern that it would be good, as their pizza has always been fantastic, just to find the cheese burned black on the top and burned crust. It appears there’s a new cook or something is terribly wrong, as it’s not the same restaurant in my opinion. I would give it another try if the owner wasn’t so damn rude.
Gluten friendly. We usually stop here every couple weeks or so, but I am so happy they have gluten free pizza now. Their baked ziti or spaghetti is wonderful also with the gluten free pasta. Thank heavens for a good choice.
