Just plain awesome. If you love food and live within 50 mile of this place you need to go here. Just the sheer size of the place is impressive but the people that work here make it a great place to shop. Everyone I’ve interacted with is extremely friendly (and quick with the samples). They have an impressive craft beer selection and I have yet to be disappointed in their prepared food department. For the most part the people that work here are knowledgeable about the department they are working in and are very helpful. They offer cooking classes as well which I was fortunate enough to attend (best xmas present ever). Any foodie in the Pittsburgh area owes it to themselves to stop in here.
Market District Giant Eagle isn’t your average grocery store. It has numerous salad bars, food stations with ever-changing food items such as BBQ, Indian, pizza and a deli. Their beer selection is quite impressive. We will make special trips there just for the beef ribs with St.Louis sauce. The upstairs dining is spacious, clean and comfortable. It has become one of our favorite places to eat!
Crab cakes. Ok, this isn’t about the restaurant, but rather the store itself. I suppose I could rave about the insane selection there–down to the beers and ciders–but I will stick to one thing: crab cakes. Insanely good. I mean, better than I have had at MOST restaurants I have ever been to, and I lived on Long Island for twenty years. Get them, and ignore the price. Nineteen bucks a pound sounds pricey, but realize very few will ever eat that much, and when you eat the average 1/2-2/3 pound, it is PACKED with REAL lump crab and a nice little kick to it, too.
PLEASE Improve. We love this store and were so happy when it opened. Sad to say we are a little disappointed in recent visits to the store. The hot foods bar always has the same selections and is not hot. The food temperature needs monitored better. Also, on the salad bar, what happened to the dressing cups? Love the salad bar, but little take aways like the dressing cups deter a person from eating lunch there. The store concept is great, but quality control and the value adds that made the store unique are slipping a bit. PLEASE improve…..PLEASE! Will continue to patronize store and will report back in a few weeks on experience….stay tuned!
Steelhungry. Thought it could have been alot better..but overall mediocre
The first time I ate at the GEMD cafe I tried the Paneer Tikka Masala, the Tuesday special, which I loved. This time, I tried the Chicken Tandoori; for 6 bucks you get large chunks of chicken, a choice of white or brown rice, naan and a choice of mango chutney or raita. The chicken is delicious, tender with some blackening from the grill; the rice is perfectly steamed; the naan is chewy and the perfect vessel for scooping the rice; the chutney is flavorful and balances out the smokiness of the chicken. I can’t wait to try out some of their other daily specials!
Good selection. The sushi is much better than you would expect from a grocery store. Better than some sushi restaurants in the area
