It’s no piccolo forno. We had a reservation on a Saturday night. The place was packed with tables so you’ll likely knock someone’s coat off their chair or bump their table as you try to maneuver back to anything against the wall. The menu was pretty large. The special salad was very good, corkage fee reasonable at 7 bucks- those were about the only highlights. The dipping oil was tasteless, the bolognese was not good. Huge chunks of meat with onion pieces as big a nickels, weird. My friend got a red clam sauce pasta and it was soupy and sloppy, way too much liquid. Also there were rogue noodles of different shapes in each of our dishes. The dessert menu was pitiful- we didn’t get anything. The bill was expensive, way more so than it truly deserved to be, next time I’ll wait it out at piccolo for a truly unforgettable meal for 1/3 of the price and ten times the flavor.
Beware of long wait for food. Waited over 2 hours for our meal. When we asked the waitress after waiting 1.5 hours she said we had to be patient and it would be out soon. Other customers that arrived 1 to 1.5 hours after us received their food before us. When we asked waitress about this she got rude. went back to open kitchen and complained about us! We then told her we were not to wait for our food and were going to leave, She actually wanted us to pay for our meal that we never received.
Thumbs down for the ambiance alone.. I usually only take ambiance as a small part of how much I like a restaurant, but the ambiance here is so overwhelmingly bad, that I gave this place a poor thumbs down. There is no amount of deliciousness that could overcome the uncomfortable atmosphere. The place is small to begin with, so why not pack in as many tables as possible to exacerbate the problem. You’re so close to the next table you could easily sample your neighbor’s food – not to mention them sampling your conversation. They need to somehow dampen the noise level. It’s like eating in a bomb shelter. The service was slow, and not really pleasant. I think if a waitress is somewhat pleasant, it can turn a poor dinner into something a bit more enjoyable. It was clear the waitress has little joy in her life. The food was exactly as expected – typical Pittsburgh Italian – like every other Italian restaurant on every other corner from Bloomfield to Cranberry. Totally average and somewhat expensive. Had the ambiance and service been better, I may have given this a thumbs up. I had Halibut w/ capers on a bed of spinach. It was good, not great. The tasted was above average, the size of the meal was above average, the price was high. Go to The Pleasure Bar. Same food, nicer people, more room, lower price.
We waited 2 hours for our food! The owners sat right next to us, are their dinner and never said a word!
Very good service and even better food.. My husband and I went the other night and were very impressed with the service and the food. The atmosphere was relaxed without being too laid back. The waitresses were pleasant and had an ease about them which was pleasant. They seemed to be enjoying their jobs and were knowledgeable about the menu. The food was amazing! Everything was made from scratch as we ordered it and we were told that any special requests could be honored. We didn’t have any restrictions because we wanted the chef to use his artistry. I’m going to take my parents there since my father has to watch his sodium. It’s a great neighborhood place that I could go to often.
Not so sure I’d choose to go back.. My husband and I dined at Il Burloni for the first time. The first thing I noticed is that it is a cute and clean little restaurant that is short on space so as many tables as can be are packed into the available space. As a result, you can expect to have established a close relationship with your neighbor by the time you are leaving. Do not expect to be able to discuss anything that others shouldn’t hear. Because it was early evening, the restaurant was flooded with natural light. In other words, the place does not provide a romantic and private dining experience if this is important to you. I think it is safe to say that it is somewhat lacking in ambiance. Jess is a friendly and efficient waitress who did not hover but was always available. Now, to the food. The bread was lackluster, although the dipping oil was good. I am always amazed when restaurants seemingly put so little thought into their choice of bread, when it would be so easy to have great bread that would serve to entice people to come back. But, not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. The fried zucchini appetizer was not available so we decided on the stuffed banana peppers. The filling is delicious! The peppers, however, were so hot that even my husband, who can take almost any amount of heat that you can throw at him, was taken aback. The couple at the table next to ours ordered the same and when I happened to glance over at the woman, she was crying and then laughing at the same time because the peppers were so hot. Her date choked upon the first bite. It would seem that a warning might be appropriate so customers could be made aware that, if they can’t do over-the-top heat, they might not like this. I merely ate the delicious filling and sauce with melted cheese and was happy. My husband had the Ceasar salad which was good, not great, and I had the house salad. The balsamic dressing was delicious and the salad basically consisted of lettuce and a couple of wedges of tomato. My husband had the pasta with bolognese sauce and he considers himself an expert on this sauce because he orders it whenever it is available . It was good, but definitely not as good as other places where he orders this dish. I did not follow my own advice to not order anything that I make pretty well and ordered the chicken picatta. The chicken was cooked to perfection, tender and moist. The sauce had an ok flavor, but it was too runny for my taste. I prefer a sauce that is further reduced, thick and flavorful. So bottom line, it was all good, but not so good that I would choose to go back; however, I’ve learned to never say never.
No Boloney!Burloni. Mama Mia-est! What a meatballs! Huge, tender with exquisite marinara sauce and extra tasty cheeses, a scoop of ricotta on the side, I’d go back just for those 2 meatballs and nothing else! Then there was ravioli stuffed with sweet peppers in a memorable rosa sauce. Lots of perfect ravioli. Also sampled my meal mate’s delectable veal with peppers , and spaghetti which made me wonder what I will choose on next visit. This Bread Lover thumbed the bread up too. Great! friendly waitress, Kristin, very helpful in choosing from a tantalizing menu. Chocolate cake was a bit dry but frosting yummy. Making plans now to go to IL BURLONI’s next week!
