Great Experience. We just came back from a nice dinner with another couple. Generous portions, tasty food and great service. I had never eaten there before and my wife had years ago…Great atmosphere for a dinner with good friends. The waitress was cheerful and very helpful. The salad was almost a meal in itself.. A real treasure in Bloomfield.

Disappointing. I went there one weekend evening for dinner with several friends and was looking forwardto a great Middle Eastern meal. The young woman who served us was wonderful andthe dining room while a bit shabby was comfortable. The food however was not good.I ordered a mezza plate plus a side of kibbe nay (raw minced lamb). The portions were generous but the quality was bad. The kibbe was served at room temperature and wasnot seasoned. It was like eating mush. The grape leaves were not fresh but mushy and I am sure they were out of a can. The humus was bland and the baba ganoush was even worse. The cooking has really gone downhill. Plus they added a 20 percent service charge to the bill.

Consistently inconsistent.. I first visited Khalil’s II around 1980 and I’m glad they’re still around, but I would very much like to see some improvements. The interior is dark and run down, and food items are inconsistent. In my most recent visit, the mixed appetizer plate was wonderful, and the rice pilaf was some of the best I’ve ever had, but the lamb shish kebab was very disappointing. The pieces of meat were all different sizes (scraps?) and some were very tough and chewy. And presumably because of the different sizes, some were well done and actually burnt and crunchy though they were ordered medium-rare. The time before the rice pilaf was awful and tasted like it was a reheated frozen commercially made product.

The food was tolerable but presented like it was 1975. I mean really are carrot sticks an appropriate garnish these days? The kitchen was brutally slow with some items coming after our meal was done. Needless to say they were comped. This place would make an excellent show for Gordon Ramsey’s Kitchen Nightmares.

Like Family Only Better. Khalil’s and I go back a long time. I went for the first time over 20 years ago with my grandmother. She wouldn’t eat any other Middle-Eastern food in the city. (She had spent her entire career in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. She knew what was real and what wasn’t.) Back then, it was a bit out of our price range, and I always reserved it for a special treat. And special treat it was, because the flavors weren’t duplicated anywhere else I could find.Fast forward to being more grown-up, having a career and being more settled in the world. When I became pregnant with my son, the only food I could really stomach came from one of two restaurants. Khalil’s was one of them. And the portions were enough for me to make it last throughout the week.Don’t go to Khalil’s if you are looking for cheap, bland hummus, watery tabouleh or baba ganoush without that hint of smokiness. Don’t go if you want it smeared like a skid mark on a plate with a half-hearted sprinkle of paprika to disguise its lack of flavour. The presentation is fantastic, authentic and challenges the idea of Middle-Eastern food as quick and easy grub. This is gourmet Middle-Eastern food. This is a restaurant which selects fine, fresh ingredients and combines them into a satisfying, wonderful meal.KID FACTORMy son adore Khalil’s. Nowehere in the world will he eat lentil soup – except at Khalils. I can share an ample portion of a kabob with him and still take some home for lunch tomorrow. And because he is a potato-head, their homemade chips are just what he loves most of all. In addition, the wait staff are very attentive to him and make him feel welcome. BIAS/BONUSI have loved Khalil’s for many years. I’ve transformed from an infrequent customer to feeling like part of the family. It didn’t take all that long. A sincere and genuine appreciation for the food; a willingness to ask questions and learn about the food; the ability to be respectful to the servers and a few visits….and now I can have a family meal….without all of the baggage of family.
