I had some business to conduct downtown and was early so I decided to stop in the Apollo Cafe because it was the closest place to get some breakfast. From the second I walked in I felt lost. I wasn’t sure where to go to order my food or if I would be seated first. I quickly figured it out. I had to look around to find the menu and turns out it the one I needed of the many that were posted around was behind me. The pricing on the menu seemed like it was from 20 years ago. It was unbelievability low. I decided to go with the sirloin steak and eggs, with home fries and toast, $7.50. And here comes my first issue. They only accept cash. Yes they have an atm on site, but it charges a $1.50 fee to withdraw. It works, but is inconvenient. Service consisted of being told to grab silverware from behind me and have a seat. It wasn’t busy so I was brought my food in just over 5 minutes. At first glance, my plate looked pretty good. But the more I examined it, the more dismal it became. First, the egg that I ordered over hard was barely over medium. I cut it and the yolk ran all over the plate. Next I went to the steak that was supposed to be rare. It was actually a solid medium without a speck of pink to be found anywhere. It may have turned out better if it hadn’t been cubed. The potatoes treated fine and were covered properly, but had an odd appearance. They were dark brown and appeared to have been heavily seasoned, but had no taste of seasoning. Maybe cooked on a griddle that hasn’t been cleaned in a while? Pure speculation here. Actually, everything seemed devoid of any seasoning. Maybe to cater to the elderly people i saw in there? The toast was a little difficult to eat. It was a one inch thick slices of Italian bread so once it was toasted, it was like trying to bite a board. And lastly, being a Chef, I have a big issue with sanitation in the kitchen. I watched at least two people touch the top of every plate that was brought out. That’s something that every server should know not to do. And there is no way to know how many other customers had reached into the same horizontal bin of silverware with who knows what on their hands that i did to get my fork and knife. Now here are my good points about my experience. The portion size and the food in general gave me the feeling of Mom’s kitchen. Just large portions of good food. Mine may not have been cooked the way I ordered it, but it was good all the same. Also, it was my first experience there, but I watched many other customers come and go and the employees seemed to know them all by name. Kudos for that.
