I tried to use a birthday coupon but the waitress insisted she could not take it off my phone. It had to be printed. We walked out.
Awful. I am in town for the weekend and thought I would try something new. Terrible idea. I ate here and not even 45 minutes later was sicker than a dog. The food was bland and they only offer food that can be prepared in a deep fryer.
It Was Waaaaay Better Years Ago. I’ve been spending money here for over 30 years. I remember the huge 99 cent fish sandwiches in the 1980’s. Before the year 2000, this was my one stop shop for a thorough fish sandwich, fries, slaw and beer to go. From 2000 to present, I’ve only visited 3 times since. The big guy behind the counter was cool but the rest of the employees there were very ignorant and had major attitude with the customers. The last time I visited, I ordered the Columbo (fish seasoned with Italian bread crumbs and spices), then their biggest fish sandwich, fries and slaw. Food is still delicious but pricey, which is why I don’t frequent here as much anymore. This isn’t a top notch seafood place but they sure act like it is. It’s a greasy spoon but they get much notoriety because they’ve been around over a hundred years and many entertainers & pro athletes have eaten there. I’m gonna ALWAYS have a love/hate relationship for this place but I’ve been getting my fried fish fix at Robert Wholey as of late.I truly hope the owner has renovations in store for this historic landmark.
I do not recommend this restaurant. The waitress was rude, you have to use all plastic and styrofoam, and the food was not great. How can you screw up coleslaw? I will say the fries and crab cakes were good but still wouldn’t ever eat here again. I would also add for a restaurant called the oyster house their oysters were sad.
They know their niche. Sometimes you just have to have greasy, fried fish in a basket. Within 5 minutes. No waiting, no hassle, no bells or whistles. Just greasy fried fish in a basket. When that craving comes, there’s nowhere better in Pittsburgh than here.
Wonderful and reliable!. I think I had my first fish sandwich at the Oyster House when my Dad took me there at the age of seven. That was sixty years ago and while the fried fish sandwich is no longer the 35 cents he paid I still enjoy the food and atmosphere. The service is super efficient, the fish (at least what I have eaten there) is never greasy or over fried. I still am fascinated by the photos of the Miss America contests in Atlantic City and I still am confused why anyone would order buttermilk with their fish sandwich. The Oyster House is not gourmet eating and anyone who expects it should stay away. But for me it is still a great place to have lunch!
How can it not be GOOD. If you have been in business since Jesus was walking around the face of the earth, you must be doing something right. Just go get the basic fish sandwich and slaw, you can’t go wrong.I know the menu has not changed in 150 years, but i may offer some advise, cook the french fries more so you are not serving a raw potato soaked in grease. Anyway, this is an old quirky Pittsburgh place which has survived since before the days that cars traveled through Market Square, so you have my respect.
