Wanted to try something different.. I wandered the streets of Pittsburgh for about 20 minutes thinking about what I was in the mood for regarding lunch. I wanted to try something different, and I found it alright. The salad: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Chicken. When I got back to the office and popped the lid off I immediately noticed they had forgotten the radishes. Maybe it would have made a difference, but I doubt it. Everything in the dish had a freshness to it, but also a blandness. The chicken reminded by of boiled meat that had been thrown on a grill afterwards, and the undercooked flavorless noodles added a disgusting chewy quality to each bite it was included in. This dish was so bad I could only force myself to eat half of it (and I only swallowed that much down to try and make up for the price). I even had 5 of my coworkers try the salad to guage if I was overreacting, and each of them agreed that it was not only awful, but one of the worst salads they had ever eaten.

Overpriced. This place is very overpriced and they rarely get your order right. I’ve never been there when they haven’t been out of a key ingredient (today they were out of mesclun mix—how does a salad place run out of lettuce?!) and there have been times where they have ran out of chicken. Today I paid the extra $1.25 for avocado and after I got back to my office saw that they forgot it. If you do go here make sure to double check your order before you leave. Also the ordering system needs updated, there are too few people working during lunchtime which leads to long longs in a crowded space and incorrect orders.

Don’t Do It. Let me paint you a picture: made-to-order salads, quaint store in an urban setting, organic food…sounds too good to be true, right? Well it is. Don’t be deceived by Toss’t- beneath the charming exterior of their restaurant lies misfortune.I went there in hopes of finding a made-to-order salad substitute for days I want Hello Bistro but can’t get there and thought I’d give Toss’t a try. I walked in, excited when looking at the menu and seeing all the options for dressings (one of the best parts of the salad). I stood where it looked like I should stand but there was no definitive area of where to go. Upon closer examination of the menu, I saw that a salad was roughly $7 (not bad) and you only get 4 toppings- anything more than that was $.50 extra. Two extra toppings are putting me at $8. Okay, still not too bad. They don’t tell you that the crunchies (croutons and whatnot) are an additional price. Oh yeah, cheese costs extra too. Want to get that protein? Sure, they’ll give it to you for an unmarked price. I don’t know if it was lucky for me that the dressing was free because it was disgusting. They barely put any on there which really emphasized how funky tasting the lettuce and shrimp I got was. I had high hopes for Toss’t, I really did. But my overpriced bottle of water could not get the taste of deception out of my mouth, as well as that raunchy shrimp. Save yourself the heartache and just don’t do it.

And They Delivered….. Great concept…and Toss’t delivered on it! Granted I just tried it for the first time and tried one salad, Thai One On, but it was a fantastic experience. If they can keep up the same quality and quantity this place will stick around and I’ll be one of its avid customers. The ingredients were incredibly fresh and the flavor outstanding. And, it was loaded with shrimp. I would think that could be an area that a skimpy take out restaurant would skimp on, but not Toss’t. I had whole plump, fresh shrimp from beginning to end. The dressing was awesome and I really appreciated that they offer 3 levels, light/medium/heavy. I definitely found my new favorite lunch spot and I can feel good about myself after eating there!

Good salad. I went last week. The line moves very quickly. I got the salad with salmon and goat cheese (fixed menu item). It was good. They have fixed menu items and build your own. I think the pricing might be difficult in this market, but I love the variety of dressing and toppings.
