Dining at Tana is a unique experience, mostly because of the food. The dishes are served on top of wheat crpes. You eat by breaking off a sliver of the crpe and then you use that to pinch the food into a little bite-sized taco. Many Americans can’t operate in restaurants without the aid of a fork and knife. If you want to get outside your comfort zone, Tana’s is a good place to introduce yourself to African cuisine. The atmosphere is cozy and casual. Posters of Ethiopia hang on the wall. White table cloths cover the tables. The floors are hardwood. The decor is not fancy or exotic, but simple and unimposing. Our waitress was friendly and knowledgeable of the foreign dishes. She can even pronounce the names authentically. Don’t let these strange words intimidate you. There will be someone there to clarify. A man from the kitchen presented our dishes and taught us the proper eating methods. If you are looking to try a new cuisine, Tana’s will satisfy your taste buds and fill you up for a good price. I can’t see myself eating there often, but it is definitely worth trying out.
Please try it!. I went here for the first time last night and loved it. The food was delicious and it was not as packed in as some other Ethiopian restaurants. The owner is from Ethiopia himself and was out talking and laughing with customers. As a vegetarian I would recommend the Misir Wot, Ye Abesha Gomen and Shiro Wot. My dad ordered the lamb and really enjoyed it. The flavors in each dish were unique, not just different vegetables in the same spices. They were also great at accommodating picky kids. Unfortunately, the restaurant was almost completely empty save three tables including our own. So I now beseech you to give it a try, not only because I think it was excellent but also for my own personal agenda of keeping the place open so I can make a return visit. Over all I would highly recommend Tana to anyone.
My first go at Ethiopian food. …was a success! The owner is very friendly, he even was carrying my son around the restaurant, and the waitress was delightful. I’ve been here twice so far and the food has been a success on both occasions…very flavorful and new, but not overpowering. I have tried all but 2 items on the vegetarian menu through the sampler and have not met one I did not like. Most items have onions in them as well…I hate onions, but I had no problem enjoying them in these dishes. Also, I have found a new appreciation for turmeric. High recommendations for Tana.
Delicious!. My husband and I had the vegetarian sampler and everything was delicious. The food tastes like home cooking, and in my opinion maybe more authentic than Abay. Be sure to try the spiced hot tea- it tastes like cloves and it’s so good. The staff was very friendly and we didn’t feel rushed. Great place to relax and just enjoy the excellent food.
We did the tana samplers which you can choose five meats and/or vegetables. With many of the choices you can choose mild or hot spice levels. I chose hot for a few of mine and i felt it could have had a lot more spice to it. The overall experience was good-service and food. I would recommend it to people to give it a try.
Try It. We’ve eaten Ethiopian food across the USA for over thirty years, as often as possible, and have to recommend that you give it a try. In Pittsburgh, Tana is a good place to start, as their food is flavorful yet not too hot for newcomers to the cuisine. If you enjoy Indian curries you will also like Ethiopian food – different but similar. The injera is as good as it gets at Tana, and the yellow peas are excellent – our basis for comparison to other Ethiopian restaurants. If you hate greens and are a dedicated carnivore, you might be surprised at how much you like the collards and other veggies here. Or you can try the chicken, beef, or lamb – they have a couple of varieties of each.
