Shocked , Disgusted and Disappointed. What should have been a decent review has evolved into a surprising negative experience. We had dinner at Ichibans with my family Sunday evening 3/16/14. I order take out here almost every week and had dined in 4 or 5 in the last few months and expected tonight to be the same pleasant dining experience I was accustomed to. I ordered Tom Yum soup and Bean Curd Szechuan Style. The soup was extremely salty, more so than I have ever tasted soup before. I had a few spoonfuls but dare not have any more for fear of filling my sodium quota for the week. What really shocked and disappointed me is the uncaring, unapologetic attitude of our server and the staff when I bit into a piece of Tofu and got a giant wooden splinter stuck in my gum. It was not only disgusting, but also painful cutting my gum and drawing blood. I quietly called the waitress over to show her the piece of wood. It was obviously a piece of skewer that made its way into my food. I whispered to her as to not embarrass them and bring it to the attention of the other patrons in the restaurant. She asked if I wanted another dish but at that point I just said no. I was expecting a manager or the chef to come over to apologize but that never happened. I was sure I would see some kind of adjustment on the bill but when I got the check it was for full price. I was expecting a complimentary desert or maybe 10% off our check or something to make up for my experience but was disappointed. We quietly went over to the cashier / manager? and requested some kind of adjustment. I explained that any reputable restaurant would comp the dish or offer something free and at least beg forgiveness. After all I was injured because of their carelessness. What was begrudgingly offered to me was 10% off the dish which came to .80 cents. Our bill was over $50 and they offered me .80 cents and still no apology. With a little more care and concern about their customers I would have shrugged it off, but the way this was handled was just horrible. Ichiban has lost my good will and my continued patronage as well as my familys.
Good Place. I am originally from Jersey and am often upset that the foods in the Poconos does not measure up to Jersey’s restaurants. I had a difficult time finding an acceptable Chinese place to eat. Ichiban is the one place that is decent enough. I used to go there a few years ago when it was under different management. The food was good then and it is good now. The only difference is when you eat in the restaurant now they do give you less than they use to. They do give you a large portion if you take out.The place is pleasant enough to eat in. They have booths and it is clean. The staff is pleasant and attentive. The menu is both Japanese and Chinese now. It used to be only Chinese. The menu is large. The prices are normal are Chinese restaurants in this part of the country. The food is good. It is not spectacular, but not horrible or even average. My one friend loves the place and always suggest going there so I have eaten there for lunch every week or so for last six months. The quality of food is consistent. I personally never got food covered in soy sauce like another reviewer wrote. I never got old rice. The sushi is ok. It is not the best. It is good though. It is better than other places in the area. The hot tea they serve is in traditional small cups though, which I don’t like. It has no real taste. It is the best Chinese in the Poconos I have tried. So it is the Chinese restaurant I frequent most often.
The food let this place down. From the outside this place looks like a badly lighted store the place could do with a good clean inside and out the lighting inside horrible maybe so you can’t make out how old the food is ,food was a mixed match of both Japanese and Chinese with they got both wrong to must salt or soya sauce added to everything the rice had a crust on it had to be days old staff where pleasant there was a few I the restaurant this place needs a revamp seam to be doing a good steadily take away trade .wont be back overall staff 7/10 food 2/10 what a let down…. CHEF SCULL
Food — both Japanese and Chinese — is highly variable. The same dish can be awesome one night and mediocre the next. Catch ’em on a good night!
HORRIBLE!!!!. This restaurant was the BEST chinese food in the Poconos. However, it recently changed owners. I have tried it twice and won’t go back. Everything is swimming in soy sauce. Imagine a nicely flavored fried rice or entree and then imagine pouring 3 or 4 cups of soy sauce on-top.. that is what their dishes taste like. Even their fried rice was swimming in soy sauce. I won’t go back.
Good japanese and Chinese food and sushi. Not the best atmosphere because of the floresent lighting.
