Terrible service. I’ve never written a review a restaurant review before, but I have to share my experience today. This place has a great beer list and ok (if ordinary) food, but the service is absolutely terrible. It took over an hour for our wings to be served – my 12 year old son was on the verge of tears because he was so hungry. When I complained to the owner, she yelled at me/us and said it was our problem. This person has no concept of customer service. I will most certainly never go back to Hough’s and I recommend that you don’t either – there are plenty of places to get wings/sandwiches and beer where the ownership actually cares about their customers.Ugh…so unhappy…
Here is my two cents: Come here for the amazing beer selection and not the subpar food. One of the best bars in the Burgh for beer in fact, and Ive been to many over my two years here and consider myself somewhat of a connoisseur. Go to Szmidts Deli for amazing sandwhiches and perogies then Houghs for amazing beer. Not only is the selection huge, Wednesdays from 4-6 is half off pints and $5 off growler fills on Mondays. A must for beer enthusiasts!
We will definitely give them the benefit of the doubt and try again.. My fiance and I went there yesterday to get dinner and drinks. We entered Hough’s around 8pm. Unfortunately, we forgot it was game 7 for the Pens Stanley Cup playoffs so the place was packed. We stood at the door waiting to get seated. Since we had never been there before we did not know the routine. There were no signs saying please wait to be seated or please seat yourself. So we waited a bit in the meantime two or three servers both male and female both walked passed us never saying a word or acknowledging our presence . My fiance attempted to get the attention of one of the waiters but she brushed on by like he didn’t exist. I thought my fiance was going to explode so we left. I am willing to give the place the benefit of the doubt. Frankly, it was a busy evening. We will attempt to go back on a night there is no game or event. I have heard great things about the beer selection at this place. I hope next time it doesn’t disappoint!!!
Hough’s used to be one of my favorite places, but they recently made some unfortunate changes. The menu is completely different because they hired a chef, but in my opinion the quality of the food has declined. My favorite selections from the old menu were removed. Trivia nights are still fun, but the wait staff really can’t keep up when it gets crowded. I’ve waited 20 minutes for a beer on several occasions, and good luck getting a refill. The bartenders on the other hand are great, always friendly, fast, and informative. I still frequent Houghs pretty regularly, but it has gone to one of my favorite pubs in Pittsburgh to a mediocre restaurant/bar.
My friend and I went there last weekend for dinner, and to try out their beer selection, they have over 70 on tap. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger and was quite disappointed. The special sauce tasted like they just squirted some dressing from a bottle of thousand island dressing onto the bun, and the burger tasted like they took some meat out of the package, made it into a patty, cooked it, and then served it on a bun. No seasoning. The tater tots weren’t bad, but the burger was quite a diappoinment. The service was okay, but the place was packed and we had to sit at the bar for a while before a table opened up, which we then had to fight for. Lots of beer, but I don’t recommend this place.
Foodie not a Beerie. First let me say I barely gave this a thumbs up. My sandwich and tots were very tasty, so its hard to give a thumbs down. And that BEER smell that HITS you at the door?? Its from the do it yourself brewery that connected to the place. But I digress….This is definitely a beer place that sells food. I prefer food places that sell beer. The tip off is when the beer menu is 6 pages and the food menu is 2.Hough’s has it’s place. Its for beer afficianados of which I am not. This place has a wall of beer taps, literally.I opted for the Hawaiian Burger, which is fried SPAM, a pineapple ring, red onion and melted swiss. Excellent flavor combination!! I got it with tater tots. Thoroughly enjoyed it! It ALMOST went south from here…the Beerie with me ordered a burger and asked to hold the special slaw on top. The waitress said the slaw HAS TO come on the burger! She said the cook got pissed when there was a deviation from the menu! I said hold on, you saying the burger MUST come with slaw on it? Waitress said yes. I told her that was silly, doesnt the cook have to actually ADD the slaw?? We’re making his job easier!! She said she would ask, and I told her if it come out with slaw I’m sending it back. It came out WITHOUT slaw. Crisis averted.Just the fact that she said that, totally annoyed me. The saving grace was Beerie thought the burger was very good. Food thumbs upTiny menu thumbs downBeer selection thumbs upAtmosphere – TavernPretentiousness thumbs downThe food was good, but this place was meant for Beeries.
Overrated, overpriced, practically fast food served with no presentation or flair. My buddy got a burger which was embarrasing for the $10 they charged and my pulled pork sandwich left me craving another beer to cleanse my palate. So I chose a beer off of the extensive draft beer list only to be told they were out of it. Very disappointing experience overall, I will not be back.
