Went here last weekend for my mom’s birthday as this is one of her favorite restaurants. First, the dcor is very American touristy, probably not terribly authentic but it is bright, colorful and fun, so thumbs up on the dcor.We ended up ordering a bunch of different things for the table so I’ll organize my review by food type.Dips: The salsa they bring to the table while you wait is very good. It isn’t terribly chunky (which I personally prefer) and has a definite spicy kick and pleasant after burn to it. We also ordered the guacamole and it was also very good. Again, it was smoother than the guacamole you get from most places and it was not overly spicy. It had a strong avocado taste, which I like (avocados can be expensive and a lot of restaurants seems to cut the guacamole with a lot of tomatoes and onion, so much so you almost lose the avocado taste, this was not the case here). The queso dip was ok, it wasn’t the best I have ever had, but it was probably solidly in the top10 for the Pittsburgh area as far as queso goes.Quesadillas: We ordered both the shrimp and the crab quesadillas. We had a little miscommunication with the waiter on this (we ordered 2 shrimp and 1 crab, and he brought out 2 crab and 1 shrimp, and it took a few minutes to get him to understand the issue, but once he did, he fixed it) I preferred the shrimp, my father preferred the crab, and my mom liked both equally. They were very simply prepared (just seasoned protein and cheese) so I definitely recommend ordering guacamole to go with it as I put guacamole on everything.Enchiladas: My husband meant to order the combo plate of 1 chicken enchilada and 1 chicken burrito but accidentally ordered 1 chicken enchilada and 1 cheese enchilada. It ended up being a happy accident as he loved both (although we were first confused as to why they both thingslooked like enchiladas).Sides: The guacamole salad is excellent, the rice is good with a nice buttery aftertaste, and the refried beans are about what you would expect from refried beans (if you like refried beans you will like these I’m guessing).Chilies Rellenos: this is the dish that brings my mom back over and over and over. She loves it. She adores it. I wasn’t too keen on it (but I don’t like peppers/chilies so I probably am the wrong person to ask). All in all, we definitely enjoyed our meal. And while ,my husband and I won’t be going out of our way to eat here (its about 1.5 hours away from us). When we visit my parents, its definitely on the list of places to go.
Strip Mall Junk. After reading the good reviews, my wife and I went there. NEVER TO GO BACK AGAIN! Got the ‘Special Dinner’ and Tacos de Carne Asado. Lots of food for the money…but not food we would ever want to eat! Bland bland and bland, did I mention bland? The ‘special dinner’ consisted of ground meat wrapped in everything imaginable and a salad that McDonald’s wouldn’t serve. The only thing ‘Special’ about that dinner was the pure volume of crappy food. Really? Hot house tomatoes when fresh are available everywhere? The rice was like Mexican rice-a-roni the Pico De Gallo was a murky mess, and the whole meal was just awful. To add insult to injury, the jerk at the register couldn’t even open his surly face to say ‘thank you’. It’s obvious that the Mexicans are copying the Chinese in the way they present their food and their menu, but, if you are going to do that, DO IT RIGHT!
Excellente. 1st time at El Patron’s. Everything was great. Margaritas, shrimp chimichanga and chips and salsa. Did I say Margaritas? Fast service during busy night. Definitely will go back.
