I’ve been to Nakama three times…each time worse than the last…shame on me for continuing to go…but there is an absolute dearth of places to go in Pittsburgh. I had a reservation on Opentable; they cancelled the reservation but didn’t fail to accept my money. The server was beyond untrained. They forgot at least three of the items we ordered. We brought our own wine and they charged us a $30 corkage fee when the last time I was there they charged us $15. I asked to speak to the manager who got angry that the last person hadn’t charged us $30…that is THE HIGHEST CORKAGE FEE IN PITTSBURGH…and at a tired, mediocre restaurant. I don’t right negative reviews…I realize places have, like people, bad days…but it’s clear this restaurant is on a precipitous slide from the peaks of mediocrity to much worse. STAY AWAY!!!
Bad valentines dinner. I 1am an frequent guest at you southside nakama. It is usually great service and quality of food but last night on valentines I was disappointed in the quality of food and service. The soup was extremely bland. My salad came as three chunks of iceberg lettuce with no tomato or anything else and my filet was over cooked. The only positive was the staff being friendly even on the busy night.
Not worth the money at all… The sushi was not fresh and the rolls were poorly made, the hibachi grill filled the whole place with smoke and there was a horrible odor coming from the bar. The bartender was slow and rude and to be honest I would much rather just save the time and money by going somewhere like yama or saga. The sashimi was unevenly sliced and kind of dry, plus the rolls fell apart when you picked them up. The menu selection was very limited and the descriptions definitely oversell the food they serve. After my first visit there i can easily say that it will also be my last.
So far the best sushi I’ve had in the Pittsburgh area. Fish and other ingredients were fresh which is I think is extremely important for good sushi. Sat in the bar, service was honestly pretty bad. So in the end, this place is getting my like based on the quality of its sushi for the Pittsburgh area.
Save your money. It is clear to me that Nakama does not value their customers. Everything was wrong about this place. From the atmosphere and the snotty waitress down to the over-seasoned vegetables and undercooked chicken, not to mention the drunken cook!! You would expect special tricks, lots of fire, a cool flip? Nope. Instead he kept dropping everything, no enthusiasm and very quiet. When I asked to speak to a manager I got smart comments and eye rolls and a manager never came out. $20 for a cup of cold white rice, 10 over-season vegetables and 10 pieces of under-cooked chicken? No thank you!!!
Overrated. Way better hibachi in Pittsburgh for cheaper. Charges about $4 extra for fried rice instead of steamed. Hostesses are rude… didn’t pay attention to me until they were done looking at their phones and talking to their friends.
Nakama, meh. The one bartender is very strange and I was put off by the way he yelled that another man had purchased drinks for my guest and I; I didn’t think the whole bar area needed to know. It’s obvious that Nakama attracts a strange crowd. As I waited for a table I watched another party complain and complain about not being seated (bc the rest of their party was late). The management seated them anyway and I still watched them complain about EVERYTHING. They had multiple servers, the manager was over a few times and I’m pretty sure they ended up selecting their own chef. I was astounded then, that as soon as our server boxed up our meals the manager came over and asked us to leave so they could seat more people. I guess you can expect super awesome service when you go there and act like a jerk? Even though my server and chef were great I’m not sure a return visit is worth it.
