Pleasantly Surprised. I’ve lived outside of Pittsburgh for about 10 years in Italy. I’d been noticing some of the newer, non-chain restaurants popping up in the past years when I came home to visit my family and finally decided to try one. I set the standard high by choosing an Italian restaurant since I am used to ‘real’ Italian food and, unfortunately, most American Italian restaurants still have menus based around Spaghetti and meatballs and wedding soup. Stagioni’s menu looked different so I thought I’d give it a try. I had checked out pictures of the restaurant online and was happy to note when I walked in that the decor is not what it looks like online. It was a bit sparse and ‘anonymous’ for my taste, but it was clean and inviting. Our server was very courteous and knowledgeable without being overbearing. I began with a an amazing cocktail that was made with St. Germain, mint and gin. It was perfectly refreshing for a hot summer night. It was very strong, however, so I actually nursed it throughout by dinner, which meant I didn’t get to try a wine. We began with the mozzarella appetizer which had got so many great reviews online. Both of my dining companions and I and felt it was overrated. The mozzarella was good, but serving it warm seemed to take away from what would have been a perfectly good fresh mozzarella with a milky, creamy inside and just turned into a melty cheesy ball. We then had two different types of the polenta appetizer-sausage and mushroom. These both tasted great, but we were confused by the presentation. I usually see polenta cut into squares, but since this polenta is mixed with cream it become sort of soupy, which is fine, but the problems come in the plating. The sausage was brought out on a cuterie board and then the server poured the polenta right onto the board. Having to scrape the gravy-like polenta off of the board and mix it together with the sausage made it awkward to eat. I then had the red bass entree and a side of Rapini and beans. I was thrilled to see that the bass only came with a caponata (which I had on the side) with it. American restaurants tend to drown fish and meat in sauces, making it impossible to taste the actual main food, but that’s not the case here. The shape of the filet seemed pre-cut which worried me, but the flavor was actually not too bad. The side of rapini and beans was very, very good, although it had way too much garlic which overpowered the sweet, buttery flavor of the rapini. To finish I had a glass of the chilled pasito, which was a nice end to a dinner without wine and no dessert. For two appetizers, a main, a side and two drinks my bill was around $75. While I think there is some room for improvement, I do think that Stagioni’s is one of the only places in Pittsburgh to find authentic, fresh and thoughtful Italian cuisine. I will be back next time I am in Pittsburgh and would recommend it to others.
Wonderful Birthday Dinner. Grew up in Pittsburgh but now only visit occasionally. Decided to spend my birthday weekend here and wanted a special dinner. Found it at Stagioni’s. From the friendly greeting upon arrival to the excellent service and wonderful food, it was a delightful experience. Four of us enjoyed the varied appetizers and our mains, but standouts were the polenta with savory toppings and shaved brussel sprouts. Thumbs up for this wonderful gem on the South Side!
Blahsta. Me never like a italian food until today but oh, they know a how they cook pasta. they have special dough ball much like other dough ball you get at store but this special. they cook with sauce and garlic and you pay good good money such special ingredient so different. its so special. you eat to much it so good then pasta way. eat then pasta way
I walked in, and I was astounded by the rustic feel of the entire building. I sat at the bar and asked the owner for a drink recommendation. She made me an amazing mixed whiskey drink. Never had anything like it. I then proceeded to sit down and ordered the fresh mozzarella. It was to die for. I then ordered the wild boar with the polenta and kale. It was one of the best dishes that I have ever eaten. The boar melted in my mouth, and the flavors mingled so well. Overall, amazing experience there, and I will be back
I have never given a restaurant a negative review until right now. We were at Stagioni to celebrate a birthday and ended up having a disappointing dining experience: average food, disorganization, poor service, and a broken computer system…all of which lead to an experience that lasted way too long (4 1/2 hrs for dinner). It took us 1 hour to get the check and while we sat shoved in a hot room… No one checked on us or brought us anything, not even coffee or water. The owner/manager hid behind the server, sending her out to take the heat. On one hand, I understand that things can happen and perhaps this is an isolated incident; but on the other hand, the management didn’t really seem to care so maybe this happens a lot and, if so, I wanted to share our experience.
Came Back a Second Time. It was good the first time and reasonably priced. We went there a second time and though they weren’t very busy, everything that the three of us had was stellar. I even talked to the owner and commended her and asked to speak with the Chef who is her husband just to tell him what a great job he did and keep it up. I have never done that before so you know I rally liked it.
Always wonderful. Truly something special. I especially enjoy their periodic Sunday dinners, served communal style and celebrating a specific region of Italy each time. Cara creates a welcoming and comfortable environment in the front of the house, and the chefs create magic in the back!
