Great. The zenith is a true vegan place , and they are the best at what they do. Trust me. If u don’t believe me go there for their Sunday brunch and wait in line. the baked goods are amazing . the buffet the best i ever had. the grape leaves are alright. but a+ for sure
Delicious, but I think I am allergic to the food.. I enjoyed the atmosphere and tasty bites however I am convinced there was soy in my meal even after inquiring about it. It’s too bad, I was hoping that this would be a fast favorite. Many vegetarians have developed soy intolerances and it is a shame this location relies so heavily on using it.
A Unique experience…. …at least that is what my husband said as we left Zenith Tea Room after an early dinner on Saturday night. We found the restaurant with no problem and got a parking spot out front on the street. We walked into what looked just like a huge vintage shop to the back of the building, where the restaurant is located. It was really chilly inside that night even though there was a space heater in the room. I kept my coat on and so did several other people at surrounding tables. Very nice size space with tables set for 6 or many more. (This appeared to be in preparation for Sunday brunch. A sideboard had a number of dessert cakes waiting to be unwrapped.) Service was prompt and friendly. The dinner menu is VERY limited – only a choice of 2 different entrees so we each ordered one and the other. The were out of soup, which would have been great on this chilly night. We decided to try split an order of peanut salad with our dinner – it was fabulous but extremely filling. I got the portabello teriyaki; my husband got the ground nut stew. Both orders were hot and plentiful, but they needed some seasoning to make them complete. We felt good we were eating a healthy meal, but I don’t think I would go back for dinner. The wraps on the menu looked interesting, but we wanted something warm on this cold night. The pot of oolong tea was good. There are many other choices available. If you are looking for a funky place for dinner and find the menu interesting, this could be a good spot for you. It’s nice to browse the items for sale after dinner. It is BYOB too. Maybe the Sunday brunch might be a good time to give it a try.
Not enough veggies.. I lean very much in the direction of vegetarian, and I love supporting places that make a point to add veggie options to the menu. I also believe that vegetarianism is more about eating mostly veggies than not eating meet. Grains, sweet breads, and tofu substitutes add balance to a veggie diet, but it all comes down to vegetables. The veggie crowd loves Zenith, but I really don’t. I strive for (somewhat) healthy eating wherever I go, and Zenith doesn’t make that easy. Their Sunday buffet is overwhelmed with sweet breads, grain-based salads, and plenty of items for which vegetables are a small component. Even the entrees tend to be cheese-laden standards with tofu meat substitutes. In the end, it’s just too much of a challenge to find something I really feel good about eating.
2 different experiences. Going here on a weekday night is like a whole different restaurant than going for Sunday brunch! The brunch food and atmosphere is top notch, but I love the extensive tea menu and clever vegetarian dishes on the dinner menu with a much quieter atmosphere, as well. Love this place! Definitely a Pittsburgh icon.
Good food as long as you don’t mind eating your meal inside of a garage sale
My advice to the owners of Zenith… Your salads are great. I love your brunch but lunch and dinner are lackluster b/c the selection is so-so. As a non-vegetarian who is also allergic to soy I cannot eat at your restaurant during the week. But I love brunch with my veggie friends b/c of the awesome salads. I take a zyrtec just in case I injest some soy. Make the menu attractive to us meat eaters and keep those salads coming on a daily basis (instead of just one salad offered per week). We don’t need meat but just a bunch of tofu based stuff isn’t enough. We want you to succeeed!!!!
