I’ve given this place multiple chances and it’s the same issue every time. Noisy, messy, and the food is not great and very pricy. Now I am really picky with my Chinese/Japanese place and won’t eat at places like this out of principle but my spouse likes this sort of thing. No authentic fair just standard American style food. And pizza on the buffet….no just no.
Going down hill. I used to love hokkaidos and was a regular customer, but lately these past few months the food has been changing and tastes a lot different. For one they don’t put out certain foods that they used to, don’t know if it was special items or what? But also the hibachi is a real bummer. I loved the hibachi and would always eat tons of it but the flavor of it has changed. They prepare it different and it does not taste how hibachi should taste. I hope they’ve changed back or will go back to how they prepare their food. I haven’t returned in about 2 months because the last few times I went they were terrible and a lot of the dishes they had out were cold. For the price they charge they should atleast make sure food is fresh hot and prepared correct if not I can go to another buffet for half the price with the same dishes basically.. I also want to add about a waitress I had after reading a similar review. I too had a horrible expierence with a waitress who rushed me and some friends when we went one night. She was trying to say we had to leave because they were closing soon even though it was about 9 pm on a Friday night and there were people in the resturant still but we were the only ones in her section so she was probably just trying to get done early or something.. I asked why they were closing early and why the woman at the door wouldn’t of said anything because we had only been there about 15-20 minutes. She barely spoke english and was rude and was rushing us so I asked another waitress to get the manager and the manager said that they were not closing early! I don’t know what was going on with all of that but it was very unprofessional and she was rushing us and kept coming over trying to take our plates and put our drinks in to go cups. It was so annoying that we all ended up not tipping her because of this. I haven’t had any bad expierences with waitresses besides this one time but still it was annoying and unprofessional that they let this happen even after we had complained.
Mixed bag…. I have mixed feelings about Hokkaido. First, the positives. The appetizers are awesome. They have great pork steam buns, which are not often on buffets. The rangoon are perfect, and the dumplings are very good. They also have a lot of traditional cold appetizers, like chicken feet and tofu with fish thread, that my Chinese friends enjoy but I haven’t tried. The sushi is pretty decent. A friend also raves about their crab legs. Plus, they have good ice cream, actual brand names, not the thin, icy concoctions that buffets often have. The fried rice is good, and Sprite beef and Korean chicken are yummy, when they are hot.And that leads me in to my big negative: NOTHING IS HOT ENOUGH. Nothing, even soup! If something has been sitting out for even a few minutes, it is nowhere near as hot as it should be. It seems like the heat on their tables is not high enough, because I cannot imagine why else the food gets cold so quickly. The place is usually relatively crowded, so I don’t understand how the turnover doesn’t keep it fresh… I just don’t get why nothing is hot enough! Also, it’s expensive. Weekday lunch is reasonable at $10, but more than that for a limited number of lukewarm food? Not so much.I recommend filling up on the appetizers, and eating lots of ice cream.
Save Your Money and Go to Your Neighborhood 10.00 Dollar Buffet.. My brother and I had went there when we had that cold snap on January 8th. This was my first time and my brother has been there numerous of times. This place is pretty big and was packed when we arrived at 7:30 pm.When I browsed the selections before eating, they had some unique dishes like frog legs, calamari and spicy chicken feet. I loaded up on the usual Chinese/American fare like the General Tso’s chicken, egg rolls, Rose chicken and lo mein. Food was good but not seasoned. Kind of bland but very edible. I was also surprised that they didn’t have fried rice but some white rice that looked like sticky rice. The duck sitting under a heat lamp was not a good idea cause it dried out terribly and wasn’t edible at all. The sausage was good. The fried fish was horrible. I did try calamari for the first time ever in life and it was tasty. Perfectly seasoned. I also tried the fried frog legs also for the first time ever and it was ok but didn’t taste like chicken like many have said. They also have a hibachi where the cook prepares your food. I didn’t order anything from there but will do next visit within a week from now. There were some delicious smells coming from that station. They also have a sushi bar where the cook made fresh rolls. Seemed like there wasn’t many visits at this station although everything looked fresh.Made my way to the dessert and fruit bar. They have good tapioca pudding and cheesecake. Had two plates of fresh honeydew melon, cantaloupe and watermelon. Fruit was ice cold and very sweet. Seen lots of people feasting on their cotton candy ice cream. Will try it next visit. They also had the fresh melons and rice krispy treats posted next to the chocolate fondue fountain. The fondue I didn’t try because the chocolate just didn’t look fresh. Looks like a muddy brown, hazy in color. I even heard a few negative comments from fellow diners about this. As much as I love chocolate, I had passed. The waitstaff were very friendly and not just a fake show. They were very sincere and they kept the drinks flowing and the empty plates away. Excellent staff.I truly didn’t feast much and next time, I’ll definitely get my money’s worth because I think this place is a little overpriced. There’s other Chinese buffets in Pittsburgh that’ll blow this establishment away in food and price. My return next week will PROBABLY be my final one if my visit isn’t as good as my first one.UPDATE ON VISIT 1-22-14Went with my brother again and we arrived around 7:45 pm and we were seated in a booth on the far eastern side of the establishment when entering the place, very close to the Asian delicasies side of the buffet. We had two different waitresses. One was young, short and a sweetiepie but the other was taller with a big head, big lips and had her hair pulled back. Looked very unkempt. She had MAJOR attitude with my brother and I when she had taken our drink orders and I recognized that immediately.Food was very good that day, even better than my debut.About 9:20pm my brother had went outside to take a personal phone call while I was eating dessert (cotton candy ice cream and cheesecake). When he came back in, he went to the men’s room while I was waiting at our table. It was about 9:40pm and my brother was still in the restroom. The bighead waitress kept asking me that am I ready to go (even though I had paid for our meals PLUS tipped her 6.00 dollars already). I told her that I’m waiting for my brother. She stormed off towards the back kitchen mad as all heck talking Asian…lol. She obviously had told her boss because the boss came over to me and said, ”are you ready to leave” and I repeated again that I’m waiting for my brother. Meanwhile, there were about 8 other customers that were finishing up their meals and NONE of the waitresses rushed them because I’ve thoroughly observed them. Finally, the bighead waitress came again to the table and said something in Asian and walked away. I can just imagine what slurs she was calling me…lol so after that, I had waited for my brother outside in the cold because he had the keys to the car. That was a goofy night. To sum it up, the younger waitress was a doll and she wasn’t present when this episode had happened. Only that tall, rude, ignorant and unkempt waitress was there and I’m sure the younger one would’ve handled her business in a more professional manner while the other one could’ve taken a lesson or two on how to conduct yourself under pressure, even though I was very patient and cordial throughout with her. DO NOT GET HER STATION WHICH IS EAST OF THE ENTRANCE BY THE ASIAN DELACISIES NEAR THE KITCHEN !!! My brother was a different story as I told him about himself and how he had me out there drowning in a puddle of embarrassment for over an half hour.Hokkaido is an OK buffet but is VERY OVERPRICED. You can read reviews from others about the waitstaff. Some were nice on my two visits but I noticed some type of hostility from many to various customers. Needless to say, this trap will not get another red cent from me. Will be trying TOKYO buffet in the very near future. Save your money and go elsewhere. TRUST ME !
For dinner, I don’t think it’s worth the price… But the reason is, you can get the same meal, for half price, at lunch. Best Asian buffet around… Or anywhere, for that matter… Including… Asia…
Glad I went!. Best of this kind of buffet I’ve been to, and only $9.99 for lunch! Everything I sampled was well prepared, not over done and simply delicious. The waitresses were very attentive and quick. Nice atmosphere and very clean. I wouldn’t have gone here if it wasn’t for the good reviews I saw. Don’t laugh, but my favorite thing ended up being the coconut tapioca pudding…I was super delicious and a great end to a terrific lunch.
In terms of the price/food ratio, this may be my favorite restaurant in Pittsburgh.. for lunch ($10) atleast. I can eat more than $10 worth of sushi there alone. Theres also a great variety of other dishes. I also think the food is the best quality Iv had at a buffet. The waitresses were always there to take away the plates and refill beverages. They charge you $8 if you leave too much food on your plate. I thought that was a bit strange. How much is too much? But overall, this is probably the best buffet restaurant I have ever been to.
