Ate lunch here today for Chinese New Year, Year of the Fire Monkey! They have a very extensive menu, which is like a book. It is the largest menu I think I’ve ever seen in a restaurant. It includes both a Chinese section, and an American section. They also had a Chef’s Specialty menu, which had some very unusual and interesting dining options. We ordered the Scallion Pancake Appetizer to start while we read the thick menu. Unfortunately the choices were so daunting, we wimped out, and instead of trying something from the extensive traditional menu, we ordered off the lunch menu instead. The food was good, but after looking around at some of the other dishes on various other patron’s tables, I think we chose wrong. Next time we will be more daring. For dessert we enjoyed the fried sweet potato patties. Also, I felt like our server was kind of crabby. We wished we would’ve had the younger server that was dancing and seemingly in a better mood. Also, I thought the place could’ve been cleaner, especially in the bathroom, where there was lots of trash on the floor, and even a cigarette butt laying on the sink.
Absolutely terrible. Soup was cold. Ask about and was told it was ok by them. I told them you cannot serve food at those those temperatures. You want food poisoning go here.
Smoked duck!. I occasionally stop into the Sechuan Gourmet and have never been disappointed. Prices are reasonable, portions are generous, service is efficient (not many smiles but efficient), menu contains many unusual items, and the seating is comfortable. I recommend going on weekdays in late afternoon. But the real treat is the duck smoked in tea leaves served with steamed bread and a side of rice.. As another reader writes try it with hot mustard and hoisin sauce.10 Sep, 2012Try their smoked duck. I have eaten here a few times and can honestly say that I enjoyed my food. I love their duck smoked in tea leaves which is served with steamed bread and a side of steamed rice. The portions are generous and the price ($16.95) is reasonable given that the smoked duck is more than enough to take home for next day’s lunch. Service is efficient and the seats are comfortable. I recommend eating the duck by dipping it in hot mustard and putting a little hoisen sauce on the steamed bread.
New name – new management. This restaurant has changed name to Sichuan Gourmet. Relatively same food, some of the same staff, but less well run. Need more staff during dinner service. Went to get hot pot but after we ordered our waiter came to tell us that it was too busy so we would have to wait another 45 mins for the hot pot because it was too busy. We were disappointed and feel they should have had more than one waiter for a full restaurant.18 Feb, 2012Fav Chinese in Pittsburgh. I’ve been to many of the Chinese restaurants in Pittsburgh and in Oakland and China Star is my favorite. First off, you need to know that they have multiple versions of some of their dishes. Why? one is the Americanized version and one is the authentic Chinese version. I know this because I have been to China, and can speak Chinese with the staff. If you are looking for some of the deep fried, higher sugar content food that is characteristic of most americanized Chinese food look no further than their american menu and the honey walnut chicken (my fav). If you crave good authentic chinese I recommend some of the sichuan style food. All is good. They also have Chinese hot pot (a food similar to fondue), which was delicious and is hard to find in Pittsburgh. On to the service. I have been twice once for hot pot, closer to closing time and the initial service was good, but later when we wanted drink refills or napkins it was difficult to get our waiter’s attention. If I had to rate service on that occasion it would be a 2.5 out of 5.The second time I went it was for dinner again and the service was excellent! We were seated right away, our orders came out quickly. We received free crispy wonton strips and sauce for an appetizer. Our drinks, including teapot, were refilled before we even had to ask and our food was boxed for us, which is not the norm for Chinese restaurants in my experience. On this occasion I would rate service with a 5 out of 5. I will definitely be returning to China Star in Sq. Hill. Tips: If you pay in cash you receive 5% off your bill. Enjoy!
Absolutely awesome. If you’re looking for authentic sichuan food.. try this place. between here and how lee you can’t go wrong for sichuanese cuisine in pittsburgh.I prefer this one a tad more than the one on mcknight road, but both are great. fantastic rabbit, frog, braised pork.. etc. just make sure to ask for the chinese menu!
Soup was not super. I have had good meals at China Star in the past and recommend the tea-smoked duck. But last week I went in search of some good soup. The server recommended the seafood soup. I waited 40 minutes for it to arrive and was very disappointed. It was a large bowl with rather bland chicken broth and LOTS of noodles, but very little and second-rate seafood — mostly surimi (i.e., fake crab) with just a few small shrimp and scallops and small pieces of breaded and fried fish. The only vegetable was a vew small slices of baby bok choy. No seasonings at all — no ginger, scallion, nothing. Really bland to the point of boring. Overall, I would rate both the soup and the service not even minimally acceptable.
Worst Chinese Restaurant in SQ. I went there with my family a couple of weeks ago and found the food absolutely tasteless. Tables were not clean. It’s absolutely not worth the money. I’ve tried most of the Chinese restaurants in Squirrel Hill and the new China Star is the worst one by far.
