Very good place. I had the kase spetzle with a side braut. Spetzle was fantastic. They added bacon. Nice crispy saut to them. I was not a fan of the braut. It’s house made with a good flavor but made without a binder and very crumbly. Service was fun, good conversation and good information. Overall good spot.

Kitschy, but amazing food. Consistently great food (amazing desserts!) and plentiful portions. Come hungry, especially for bacon.

Authentic Austrian food. Authentic food, always friendly service, but atmosphere is lacking.

One of the best restaurants downtown!. Herwig’s is a fantastic restaurant, and I’ve been to Austria and eaten food there.I’ve been there probably about three times, and each time, I was impressed with my meal. The prices are a little higher than average, around $13 or $14 for your average meal, but I’m willing to pay that for better food. The first time I went there, I ordered Wienerschnitzel. Unlike some other places, including ones I’d been at in Austria, the meat was moist and not in the least bit dry. The breading was crispy but not overpowering, and there was a slight lemon taste that made the flavor really pop. The potato salad that comes with it is nothing like the kind Americans are familiar with – it’s a light, satisfying combination of sliced potatoes, some sort of crunchy vegetable, and some lemon. The second time I went, I got a Schlachtplatt – a sampler that includes a large roast pork, a juicy sausage, and another type of meat. The pork was a tiny bit dry, but had lots of seasoning. I sampled some of my dad’s catfish, which came in a delicious brown sauce, and the fish was cooked to perfection. The portion was large and satisfying. If you ask to take home your leftovers, the humorous staff will put a takeout box on the end of a stick and make you catch it! For dessert, I had a strudel. The time I got it, it was a bit dry, but my dad claims he’s had it before and it was moist. It comes with your option of whipped cream or cinnamon ice cream. I personally thought the ice cream was yummy, though my dad preferred it with whipped cream. All in all, a great restaurant!

Awesome!. This restaurant is definitely unique in the State College area and it is a great place! We went for lunch one day and were greeted with kind words and many jokes. The menu is small, but with a lot of the Austrian staples. The owners were helpful and so much fun. The portions are HUGE, so we got the lunch portion and it was the perfect amount of food. Everything was so delicious. Plus, everything is bought fresh and local. If you are in State College and have not tried Herwig’s, then you are missing out!
