Great little spot. We had dinner there last night, and enjoyed it. They are phasing out their liquor license at the end of next month, so be sure and BYOB. We let the hostess pick us out a good cab out of the bottles they had left. We started with a small hummus, which was plenty big for two people as an app. I had the spring lamb shishkabob, which was flavorful and cooked to a perfect medium rare. I can’t remember the name of my wife’s dish, but it was essentially a pie-wedge shaped beef patty. The top of it was overcooked IMO — dry and hard to cut — but the rest of it was very tasty. They’ve got a lot of interesting things on the menu, and we’ll for sure be back to try them. For a meal with an app, two entrees, and a bottle of wine, we came out for a very reasonable $70 including tip. The service was friendly, and never rushed. Thumbs up for giving us a pitcher of ice water at the beginning — I tend to go through water fast, and hate it when the server doesn’t notice. Recommended.
Is It Open? If you see their neon signs turned on then the answer is yes. This place doesn’t keep regular hours and that is only the start of the charm. An obvious labor of love. The kind of place restaurant chains are making scarce. Armenian fare as good as it gets.Personally I go for the hummus. They will sell it to go with warm fresh pita and a hearty warning not to tip the bag since they put a puddle of olive oil in the middle. Lamb is their prime sacrifice on the altar and they have every kind of shish-kebab served during Ottoman rule.
A Landmark Establishment. I’ve been going to La Camelia for over 25 years – and it has lost none of it charm, and still serves up some wonderfully authentic Levantine cuisine. The atmosphere is cozy and romantic and the owners will come out of the kitchen to your table to check on you.
