Sumptuous, Elegant. This 156-year old elegant Victorian hotel has extended its gracious hospitality to Ulysses S. Grant and Billy Joel. Not many places can say that. Dining in the spectacular high-ceilinged dining room with its graceful ceiling fans and pitch-perfect waitstaff is an expensive and rare treat for us mere mortals unless we’re attending the wedding of a well-heeled friend. Interestingly, I found the actual lodgings at the hotel to be somewhat disappointing — tiny somewhat musty rooms hardly justifying the $300 and upwards charge per night. However, the dining experience is something to be savored and enjoyed, from the thyme and peppercorn crusted yellow-fin tuna (with cucumber/daikon Napolean!) to their signature lamb osso bucco, everything you have here will be absolutely perfect — with prices comparable to eating at a nice place in Providence or Boston, but here you will also have spectacular views of the water all around. Breakfast is actually surprisingly reasonable considering that this is a hotel (most hotels really gouge guests on breakfast) — but here you can find variations on Eggs Benedict for around $10 or $12, and simpler options like corn beef hash for $3.95.
