We waited 20 minutes for menus and water. The lunch menu had about 5 things under each category. The service was not friendly from what we seen. We all got up and left. Never again.

Over Priced for Mediocrity. My boyfriend and I dined at the Pier last week. We sat at the bar and although it was not busy it took the bartender a few minutes to acknowledge us. I ordered a key lime pie martini, which I have ordered there before, and the bartender didn’t know how to make it – which is fine but he seemed irritated that anyone would order something he was unfamiliar with. However, once the drink was made it was very good. As for the food, my boyfriend ordered the iceberg wedge and I ordered the scallop appetizer ($12). When the food arrived the iceberg wedge was fresh, was nicely drizzled with salad dressing and my boyfriend enjoyed eating it as well. That was not the case when it came to my dish. My plate consisted of two sea scallops atop 4 or 5 puny fingerling potatoes. I was insulted, to say the least. I pay $15 a pound for fresh sea scallops at my local fish market and although I understand that the restaurant, of course, has to make a profit but charging $6 a scallop is just ludicrous. When we tried to talk to the bartender about the incredibly small portion size he was indignant and stated that we weren’t getting ripped off. Whatever happened to the customer always be right? There are plenty of restaurants on Aquidneck Island so I don’t ever have to eat there again.

The Pier. My husband and I went for lunch and had one of the best meals we had all week in Newport! The atmosphere is nice too, right on the water with boats everywhere. We had the lobster bisque, calamari, mussels in green curry and steamers. Fresh and delicious! Try the sangria too..it’s great!

Masterful chef, outstanding seafood. Grade: A-Our visit to The Pier was, without doubt, one of the best dining experiences we’ve had in years. Self-taught chef Kevin Gaudreau, superior to almost any culinary school graduate, has developed ways to add exciting flavors to his dishes that still allow the seafood to speak for itself. The Pier’s lineup includes a range of seafood classics as well as a few outside specialties that add variety to the menu. It was truly a difficult decision after seeing so many tempting options, but I’m now convinced I’d have been just as happy with just about anything I could have ordered. It’s hard to go to New England and not get chowder at several places, so we wanted to try it here. The Pier’s take on this white chowder was wonderful – thick but not milky, lots of clams, and nicely seasoned with a bit of dill. It felt at once classic and a unique new interpretation.NOW the entrees…It’s also hard to pass up lobster when it’s fresh out of nearby waters, especially when it’s offered in so many tempting ways -steamed, baked & stuffed, broiled, or Thermidor…the latter caught my wife’s eye. Chef Gaudreau deconstructed the standard recipe, keeping the tail and claw pieces whole and reducing amounts of some of the dairy richness found in traditional recipes. The result was full of the desired flavors but clean and light. I settled on the baked seafood platter, offering cod stuffed shrimp, and sea scallops. The stuffing for the shrimp was exciting and harmonized with a beautiful piece of fish and fresh scallops, everything perfectly prepared. Even the accompanying mashed potatoes were outstanding.Booking our reservation on Open Table and requesting the best view possible yielded us the table at the end of the room at the window, the best one in the room. That just added to the overall satisfaction with the experience. When in Newport, if you’re thinking of seafood, GO TO THE PIER. We might just go back to Rhode Island solely to return here!

After waiting an hour and a half for service-what else do you need to say? The staff is very nice, but why can’t they hire some more help? Can’t they find anyone else who is willing to waitress a whole room alone?
