Bland food, slow service that talks on the cell phone the whole time. I could have boiled something better! Won’t come back, even if it was free.
Love it … Except. Ok, I have frequented this place for nearly the last decade it seems. The interior update that happened a few years back really improved on what was already awesome! The Mgr. Jaime is great, he always has a few secret tequilas I haven’t tried up his sleeve and the female wait staff is always pleasant & on the ball. However, as of late some of the more recently hired male bar tenders and waitstaff have become notably annoying in their persistent up selling, shame on you Don Jose’s. I get it, these guys want tips and it’s their job to sell the product you provide, but please tone it down it’s really annoying.
I’ve had better. I haven’t been there for some time. A bad meal tends to do that. If you want a traditional Martguerita? If your recipe includes sour-mix, you’ll be happy. Mine doesn’t so I wasn’t. I ordered stewed goat. I got a tasty bowl of bone, fat, and gristle. For Real Deal Mexican cuisine north of the border? XYZ Restaurant, in Manset, Maine is the best I’ve found, buy it’s >300 miles away.
3 words: Fried ice cream. Excellent authentic mexican food, great sangria, and the best fried ice cream, ever. Love this place.

Great food, great atmosphere, friendly staff, and very good prices for federal hill–entrees $12-16. seriously–people complaining about the prices must have never bought a $18 plate of spaghetti and meatballs on federal hill.people who think taco bell is authentic mexican–i.e., rhode island natives, lol–will find don jose’s too pricey and not what they were looking for. but they make their own chips and salsa, which is the 2nd best i’ve ever had (1st best was made to order at my table in guadalajara), and everything else is nice and fresh. i highly recommend some of the more exotic dishes.also try mexico at the other end of atwells, just after mt. pleasant ave. (about a mile past don jose if you are headed away from downtown). a different kind of mexican but fantastic prices and great fresh food. not upscale like don jose but very good.have fun!
