This is one of the few places I’ve ever been where I don’t feel out of place. The staff are attentive, not hoverers or absent- they just do their job, and the patrons are a fun mix of everyone from all walks of life. You don’t have to be a hipster, preppy, rich, or poor to fit in. You can just have fun.
I’d like my $4 beer without a side of pretentious rudeness, please. Since visiting the Art Bar Saturday night, I have been on a mission to use every outlet available to me to let people know what a nightmare my experience was. It wasn’t that the service was bad. I have been on the receiving end of incompetent, sub-par service at many bars, restaurants and stores. It was that my friends and I were treated as though we weren’t welcome in there at all. First off, the place was all but dead during our brief stay, so the excuse of the bartenders being busy can’t fly. The bartenders did a lot of standing around and staring off into space, always with their backs to us. To get a drink we had to verbally get their attention. Even after one of them would walk by and take an empty drink bottle away. Literally… walk by, take the empty bottle without ever making eye contact let alone asking if we’d like anything else. It appeared they were a lot more helpful to the other 5 or 6 people sitting at the bar. I was strongly given the impression that if you dare go into this place without looking the part, you are considered a second-class citizen. It actually got to the point where I felt uncomfortable there, so my friends and I left.
People Watchers’ Paradise. Bless The Art Bar, for it brings the strange and creepy out in Columbia-in a good way! If you’re visiting town or live here and want an interesting night, Art Bar has to be on the list. Try and catch the Alternacirque or Art Bar players if you can. And Wednesdays, try the karaoke.
