Sunday Brunchless. We recently saw commercials for Sunday Brunch at Carolinas in the Clarion Hotel on Gervais St. and thought we would give them a try today. The brunch is from 11 till 2 and we drove all the way downtown from the northeast side and arrived at the hotel around 11:30. When we came into the restaurant, a very nice, well appointed room where there were about three or four tables at the most seated and the remainder of the room was completely empty. The sign said, we had to see a hostess to be seated so we waited a few moments until finally a waiter came up and told us that the hostess would be with us in a few minutes. (yea, not a few moments, a few minutes.) Then a gentleman in a tie came up and said, he only have one table available, and we followed him to a small table situated directly in front of the kitchen double doors. While we stood at the table, six or seven people came in or out of the doors, along with all the sounds from the kitchen. The table didn’t even have the same chairs as the rest of the restaurant, they were these banquet type metal chairs. We were surrounded on 3 sides by completely empty tables and when I said I really would prefer to eat at another table the gentleman in the tie told us he was sorry but ALL the other tables were reserved. I really thought he was kidding, but he really wasn’t. He didn’t offer us maybe a table in the bar, or at the bar, no, it was this table or nothing. We thanked him for his time and headed for the door when we encountered a well dressed lady who appeared to be the long lost hostess making an appearance. We enquired of her if all these empty tables were really reserved and she said yes, they were. I asked if these reservations were all for right now and she said no, they were at various times. Needless to say, we left brunch-less, never to return.
