Decent. I’d say the food is just adequate. I’d go back to have a couple beers with friends, but certainly not for the food.
Go days of their specials. FIsh and Chips is very greasy. The Gnocchi is very rich and could be split between two, its very good though. Great local beer but is expensive if you go on a day other than their Mon-Thurs $2/$3 draft specials.
Adequate. Will not go back for the food.
Nice bar. Went to try the wings. They very large for wings, and the seasoning along with the sauce was WAY too salty. Also overcooked. I realize they are smoked, but I think they must have also gone in the fryer, resulting in a hard wing.
Great Ambiance, Extremely Salty Food. I love this neighborhood place, the ambiance, the location, the great menu. Sadly for those of us that like to taste the finer nuances of food, you will find The Kraken disappointing. The menu is exciting and has delicious food ideas but that is where it stops; the execution of these fabulous pub style items is for the palate-less, and taste-bud-less. The food is over-salted which immediately kills the enjoyment of what could have been wonderful. When will restaurants catch on that having salt shakers on the table gives the patron the option to decide? Or is this just a good business ploy to make me thirsty to pay for more beer? It’s too bad. I’ll gladly go their for a drink any day but will avoid burning my taste-buds out on their food. This was my 3rd attempt to eat there food. To say the least it was as consistently as salty as my first two visits. Three strikes your out.
Enjoyed. Nice place, particularly I suppose if you are into an extensive beer selection, which we aren’t. I’d like to go back, but won’t be rushing therefore. Good service and good volume of classic rock. The shrimp n grits is what will bring me back. The grits could use a little more seasoning or cheese, but the shrimp was perfectly cooked, the sausage and sauce fantastic. The fromage selection plate was huge. Blue cheese/gorgonzola warm dip was great if you like that kind of cheese. The paneer was nearly tasteless, and I’m not sure why it was included. Manchego was good. The candied pecans and berries were superb, as were the corn salsa and pear chutney. Boiled peanut hummus was generous portion and had a very good flavor, and I’m the guy who stops at roadside stands in the summer for salty goobers. Still, I would have preferred a smoother moister texture. The duck confit spring rolls were perfectly cooked, but were not particularly flavorful or memorable and I would not order again. Sweet tea was decent, but tasted a little old (perhaps b/c the weather caused closure the day before), and they ran out while I was there. I guess I will forgive them, but that is a strike for attention to detail. Overall, I’m glad we finally got here, and I’ll come back.
The food is excellent. Everything I have ever ordered has been spot on. The beer selection is great, and although they do run out of things sometimes they usually have something comparable on tap. You can get 3$ pints of really good beer on pint night. The out door deck is a fun place to hang out, and they welcome dogs outside. These are the positive points. Now for the not so positive: I have never once had a polite waitress or hostess. The service is sub par at best. Once when we were there with a group of about 7 people outside, the waitress left with the tab and never returned our change. The establishment was not due to close for another half hour at that point. The person from our group that paid happened to be from another country from which it was not customary to tip, however he was very familiar with the concept and had planned to tip, and was confused as to why she never returned to bring him back his money. He thought it was very rude and presumptuous, and I was embarrassed because I suggested we go there. I haven’t been back since because of the terrible attitudes and service of the wait staff. It truly is a shame, because the restaurant is nice and the food is excellent and fairly priced, but the service needs to compliment the overall atmosphere with great improvement if I’m going to go there again.
