Superb!!!. Relaxed atmosphere, great service, and superb food. We enjoyed the lump crab cakes, fried oysters (without the Cajun seasonings), and scallops. The seafood was cooked to perfection. I also REALLY thought the sides of cole slaw and potato salad. The cole slaw was clean and crisp tasting without too much mayonnaise while the potato salad was heavier, but tasty, without too many ingredients. Finally, our server was knowledgeable, helpful, and patient. We are staying at Pawleys Island a week and plan on returning.
Nothing special.. My fianc and I tried Captain Johns for lunch today. I had clam chowder and the fried shrimp appetizer. My fianc had the gumbo then the fried Haddock sandwich. The gumbo was good. The haddock was also ok. The clam chowder was thin and tasteless. Tasted like warm 2% milk to me. My fried shrimp were not batter fried or crusted, just a little pan fried. Not really what I had in mind. The tarter and cocktail sauces served were in a communal container with spoons, which gives me a bit of the heebs. I would much prefer to know my sauces are served fresh for me and not shared with previous tables. The food was plated in a messy fashion and the server was disorganized and not knowledgable. Good thing we were his only table. Finally, the place just looks messy and the kitchen is wide open. The view in this picture is what was straight ahead of me. We would not return to Captain Johns. There are just too many other choices that have appeal with better food and atmosphere.
The food was good, but the atmosphere was lacking. My husband enjoyed his grilled shrimp and side of fries. I was a little disappointed with my fried shrimp and side of rice. It was okay, just not what I was expecting. The shrimp were very lightly fried(like in a pan, not deep fried) and the rice was heavily seasoned (not quite sure how to describe it). All in all in was fine. If we went back, I would probably just order something different.
The whole belly clams are to die for and we really enjoyed the Lobster Roll.
Overall I liked it. As much as one could expect from a casual, fried seafood joint. Grilled scallops were prepared fine…no complaints. Very laid back service but that’s not to say it was bad or inattentive. Basic fried or grilled seafood menu with choice of generic sides (fries or slaw or potato salad). For what it is, I’d go back in a heartbeat.
Awesome oyster sandwich. The chicken salad had burned chicken and the gumbo is red sauce based, but the seafood its fresh and awesome!! Worth coming if you like oysters.
Eat at Captain Johns often. Love it. Best place for quality, quantity and value. Too bad they are not open on Sundays( june 17th), maybe that why some orher user rhought the service was slow. Best New England seafood south of Boston. Owners and staff friendly. Also willing to go that extra step to insure a Great meal.
