Man Alive.. Went back after a few years away from the island. New location. Hands down, BEST fried chicken I’ve ever had. Ms. Dye is a sweet heart who will make you feel real Southern hospitality. The price is a bit steep, but well worth it considering that you’re paying for an experience akin to sitting in Ms. Dye’s kitchen and eating her greens and sweet potatoes on a Sunday afternoon. Plain and simple, if you’re from the North and want authentic regional cuisine, look no further. Do yourself a favor and get the sweet tea. Additionally, the corn bread alone is worth the price of admission.
Amazing even for a vegetarian. She made substitutions for me so nothing made with or contained meat. Super super sweet people here!
Dye’s is AWESOME!!!. My husband and I dined at Dye’s for dinner during our stay in Hilton Head. Dye greeted us and took our order. I had the fried chicken with collards and butter beans. My husband had the shrimp and grits with candied yams. The sweet potato cornbread is divine. I’m a southern girl and can appreciate the homemade cane sugar syrup which reminded me of molasses. We enjoyed the atmosphere, food, and conversation. Dining at Dye’s was like having dinner at our aunt’s house. She serves up authentic Gullah fare. You must eat here if you visit the island!!!
Would you eat Cracker Barrel/KFC/Golden Corral for $40?. Classic Southern eats for WAY TOO MUCH MONEY! Fried chicken, black eyed peas, collard/turnip greens and cornbread to the sounds of Dye’s brother or uncle or whoever singing songs for about $40 a head! Ouch!
Best meal so far on HH. We ate at Dye’s on a Tuesday evening and found the food and service to be excellent. The highlight was the sweet potato cornbread per person. It’s the most amazing cornbread we have ever eaten and the best bite of food I’ve had in weeks. Moist, sweet, abd topped with melted butter. We enjoyed our fried fish and fried chicken but the entrees were almost outshone by the side dishes. We had two each. We both thought the butter beans and fresh field peas were the best we have had. The macaroni and cheese and sweet yams were wonderful as well. We got carry out sweet potato pie and peach dump cake because we couldn’t eat another bite. The service was fast and the staff was friendly.
Finger lickin good. The food was very tasty and the portions were more than ample. This place is really cooking in the back room. Everything taste like Momma is in the kitchen waiting for you to come home. If you want to feel at home come talk to Dye and order some okra stew with fried fish. The cornbread is good too but don’t fill up on it before your main dish.
Great food, homemade cooking. I had the shrimp and grits and all components were amazing, including the bacon and sausage served to the side of the bowl. The rest of my family had the fried chicken. It was lightly breaded and moist. It tasted Pam fried, not deep fried. The sides were great – butter beans, black eyed peas,Mac and cheese, and sweet potato corn bread. This place is small but we had no issue getting 5:30 reservation on Tuesday and walk ins were seated too. Dye served us herself. She’s all about business but very kind and friendly.
