Better fried chicken and fried okra.. Great place! The BBQ is great, but their fried chicken and the option of fried okra make it beat out Shealy’s for the best BBQ buffet in town. Great tea, and great Arnold Palmers.
A Tale of Two Piggies. For barbeque, a tourist coming to Leesville will go to Shealy’s. The locals you’ll find at Jackie Hite’s. This hash house is a throwback to the way BBQ was done by our Grandfather’s and Great-Grandfathers. It’s cooked over live coals burned down in the back yard and low and slow cooking over the pits makes this stuff just plain flat good. The simplicity of the atmosphere does exactly what it’s supposed to do…let the food be the reason you come here. The fried chicken is great and cooked just right. Hite’s beats Shealy’s by a country mile. Period.
It’s OK…. The reviewer who said Jackie Hite’s is better than Shealy’s is right. If you are in Batesburg-Leesville, don’t waste your time at Shealy’s. Jackie Hites isn’t bad, but on our visit the meat was very dry, and some pieces –being whole hog, there’s more than just shoulder meat — was more tenderloin-type meat instead of normal butt or shoulder. That’s nice, but it was so overcooked that it was hard to chew. Dry, dry, dry.Maybe we caught this place on a bad day. It’s got a good reputation, and we really were looking forward to our meal. Yes, it’s a hole in the wall, and has little atmosphere. And that’s OK with us. That’s kind of the way a barbecue place should be.But we’d hesitate to call the ‘cue succulent. So far, Farm Boys (Chapin) and Hudson’s (Lexington) are still our picks.
Best BBQ in South Carolina if you ask me. Better than Shealy’s up the road.
