Just another local bar that attracts a lot of customers on Shem Creek. It has a fun atmosphere and is always packed day and night. I have never eaten there, this is just a review of the bar scene. As a bar it serves it’s purpose, it’s a fun place to go after work with friends, they have cod hole outside as do most bars in Mt Pleasant. The food must be decent because I have never driven by without seeing it packed during lunch hours and it’s right next to Page’s which offers great food.
Great food – get the bog! Tasted great and priced right. Had a great time and will go back next time we get to the Charleston area. Good atmosphere and the food was great. Tasty and many different options.
Overpriced and misleading menu. I ate at the Shelter a year ago for lunch and was pleased with it. I was in the area again yesterday so I decided to go back for dinner . I ordered fish and chips from the menu. The price was $13.50. The waitress took my order and asked me what side item I wanted. I ordered coleslaw. Naturally, I assumed that I would be getting fish and chips which usually are served as an entre, plus the coleslaw. When my order came I got 4 small pieces of fish (about the size of a fish stick) and a small cup of slaw. This plate looked more like an appetizer plate, not a meal. I didn’t question it but probably should have. I am not a big fries eater, so I didn’t really care if I got the fries. The problem started when I got the check. I was charged $13.50 for fish and chips PLUS $1.00. So my fish and slaw dinner costed me $14.50. I asked the waitress about the extra charge, and she said that I was charged $1.00 because I SUBSTITUTED coleslaw for fries. This was not what I thought I was doing when she asked me about the side item. She asked me WHAT side item I wanted, not IF I wanted to add or substitute. Also, I asked to see the menu again, and I could not find anything on the menu that states ordering a side is a substitution that you will be charged an extra $1.00 for. And fries are on the list of sides, so why would anyone think that getting slaw should cost an extra dollar.I didn’t want to get into an argument, and I had no desire to take home an order of fries should they choose to offer them to me, so I expressed my displeasure by not tipping. The $3.00 tip that I saved paid for the fries. I wrote my complaint on the receipt. Hopefully, the waitress will bring the issue to the owner or manager. She is out $3.00 for my fries.
