Great service, bad food. I had family visiting from out of town and wanted to show them great seafood. Reviews were good so thought we would give it a shot. Service was perfect but the food lacked respect. Grilled flounder had soggy skin, shrimp overcooked and yellow tail tuna was no where close to sashimi grade. Smoked fish dip appetizer was decent. $170 for 5 people to eat so expected much more.

After Christmas seafood. On the day after Christmas another great seafood dinner evening at Russell’s with my grandson, daughter and her husband..friendly and comfortable..ordered fried flounder/shrimp combo..dozen oysters..crab cakes..and a grilled cheese for the kid..take it from me, we got our money’s worth and more, start to finish..Russell’s family knew seafood and so does he and his staff..Columbia and Durham visitors..

Love Russell’s!. We are local and have always enjoyed Russell’s. It is one of the first places we take company to enjoy great seafood!

Good, Not Great. Enjoyed the atmosphere and our server was more than adequate. The seafood was a little bland and we all three added salt to our dishes (very unusual). I would skip the cheesy potato balls and stick with the baked potato. Enjoyed the slaw, but it does have sweet pickle relish in it which some in our group did not. The hush puppies were good, but needed a bit of onion or spice. I personally enjoyed the grouper which was cooked to perfection.

Great food & service. We vacation nearby for the last 6 years or so – we make it a point to make it to Russells some time during our visit. The food is great – never had a bad meal yet! There are lots to pick from but this is on the top of our list!

So embarrrased…let me count the ways…. This is NOT good food, ‘sea’ or otherwise. I took my boyfriend (who was in town for vacation from a major urban metropolis where real, good, food is abundant), and boy was my face red! I had actually solicited recommendations from a friend who is more familiar with the area than I and this was one of the three (recommendations). To begin with, the ‘hushpuppies’ were like sweet, dough balls. Not corn-mealy at all. Next, I had the she crab ‘soup’ which is actually more of a bisque, thick and creamy with only a trace of crab flavor, much less actual crab. I ate it though because I was hungry – hey, cream, butter, cheese and potatoes isn’t horrible, but it’s really not ‘soup’ either (i.e., bisque). Then, the actual order. Deviled Crabs – no crab meat, just mushy breading that didn’t even taste of crab. The french fries are those shoe-string kind, frozen. Couldn’t they at least make a home-made french fry, if nothing else? The boyfriend’s crab cake sandwich appeared to have been deep fried and orangey in color and also not tasting of crab. I’m not sure where all of these high ratings are coming from. The only thing that I can figure is that people don’t really know what good seafood is. After seeing some of the other reviews, I would agree that Long John Silver’s and/or Captain D’s would be a better bet for seafood that this place. The best thing it has going for it is it’s location and the view (of the inlet). I don’t mind average food at times, but this food was just plain old unacceptable. In fact, this meal prompted me to create this account, it was THAT BAD. Don’t waste your time and money here.

I am on vacation, and had a recommendation to visit Russell’s Seafood Grill. The hush puppies are a simple dough deep fried with a sprinkle of sugar. The Devil Crab basket is a bland stuffing which one will be lucky to see or taste any crab. Whuke, the Crab Cake Sandwich was the worst, which tasted more like a fried tuna fish mixture. My date and I were not impressed at all by the food, but the staff was kind and cordial. I was amazed at the owners surprise when noting he had been in business for twenty years without a complaint, and a loyal clientele. My guess is they are used to mediocrity, and fail to venture out to experience really good food. Trust me, there are plenty of places that are warm in character, simple in appearance, and hearty/ creative in taste!!! Unfortunately, Russell’s is not one if those, and definitely not worth venturing out to for something you could make at home, and taste far better.
