Takes me back to Mexico. This place is authentic, no tex-mex, everything covered in yellow cheese crap here! The cabeza tacos are so good, just like my grandpa makes, and I love that the tortillas are handmade. The salsas are awesome. My husband (non hispanic) always orders in Spanish like me and the waitress appreciated that he at least tried. Their aguas frescas are great. This is the first great place we have found besides the taco truck at the flea market. We love it so much we go a few times a month. It doesn’t look like it but this place is a gem to those who truly know Mexican food. It’s hard to come across in the Lowcountry so I highly recommend it.
100% Authentic. This restaurant isn’t meant for the average American. This restaurant’s purpose is to feed Mexicans. Everything about this restaurant reminded me of being back in Mexico. When I first walked in, they immediately spoke to me rapidly in Spanish and though the place was crowded, the only English being spoken was between my wife and I. I am fluent in Spanish and love authentic Mexican, so I loved this place. I don’t see most Americans appreciating the threadbare seats, the cheesy decor, or the corn-only tortillas. The food, however, is amazing. Reminded me of Mexican street vendor food. I highly recommend the tacos – they have tongue, head (pig head?), intestine, and the ones my wife and I chose: steak, carnitas, and al pastor. 5 tacos and 1 sope set us back $9.50 + 2 cokes made the total $15 after tip. So, if you are 1. fluent in Spanish, 2. comfortable being the only white person around a ton of Mexicans, 3. love authentic Mexican, this place is for you. If you are the average American, I probably wouldn’t recommend this one.
Authentic, maybe too much. First ventured to Los Parados after reading a blog post over at Rotten Oysters (http://rottenoysters.wordpress.com/2007/03/22/mexican-on-ashley-phosphate/) about Mexican places on Ashley Phosphate. I routinely drive up and down AP and notice several taco carts. Now, I’m not Hispanic and I speak very, very little Spanish, so the idea of going to a restaurant where I was the only non-Hispanic and not speak Spanish sounds a little intimidating. But I love Mexican food and was willing to be uncomfortable for a great meal.Los Parados definitely fits into the category of hole in the wall. It is very very shabby inside with mismatching seating and booths that are really only big enough to fit children. The language barrier was also an issue. Fortunately, the waitress seemed amused that us gringos were patronizing their restaurant and she did her best to work with my broken Spanish. You can pretty much get away with pointing at something on the menu if you do not know any Spanish, but it does help to know a few common words. The menu is in Spanish with some English so you can at least know what you are orderingThe things to get there are the Tortas with carne asada (beef), the sopes with beef or pork, the tostadas with beef or the posole, which is an authentic Mexican stew with large kernels of white corn. Its comfort food at its finest. Also not to miss is their homemade agua frescas in any melon flavor or guanabana. Did I mention that everything there is cheap!? They don’t accept credit card or check, so bring cash.If the idea of not being able to communicate well scares you, check out the Los Parados taco cart where there is more likely to be someone who speaks English there.
