Loved it! Our meals were like the best home cooked meals we ever had!

Bad Pho. I ate here for the first time today, after passing it on numerous occasions shopping at H&L. So mediocre. The beef slices were cooked well-done and the meatballs were tough and dry. They use pho concentrate for their broth. My friend and I saw them using the kind you can buy in H&L in a jar. Also, they use frozen egg/spring rolls. Disappointed.

New owners/ HUGE disappointment. So, I used to eat there 2 or 3 times a month. Not anymore.Over the past few months quality declined because of what appears to be new ownership. After my order yesterday, I will not be back.First of all, iceberg lettuce in the spring rolls…wtf?Peanut sauce was horrible.H&L sells it, no excuse if they don’t know how to make it.Duck Soup-broth no longer nearly as rich.Roasted duck barely seasoned.I also ordered the Pho, and previously thought it was the best in Chas.No more tendon, no more tripe.Broth may have been dirty sock water….They used to have 2 ppl in the kitchen and delivered high quality, authentic food. Now 5 people in the kitchen produce this crap.what a shame.I have yet to try Co, but I am hoping they will curb my Vietnamese Cravings…

The ownership must have changed recently. (may-12) The original Vietnamese crew was replaced by an all Chinese team. The taste is still good but not as good as it was. I wanted to know why the old staff left but the new owners won’t tell.

H & L Asian Market, our golden find since we have been in Charleston Kind of sad to be leaving it behind when we just discovered it today! Any ingredient under the sun is there, like kimchee, live seafood, chicken uterus and kelp, specialty produce and tasty imported snackseven woks and herbal remediesit was like an Oriental culinary/cultural Disneyland, and we wandered up and down the aisles in awe as we marveled at the goods and wares, wishing we had a fortune to spend on random tasty treats and wondering how some of the stranger ingredients might be transformed into something interesting and possibly edible 🙂 The highlight (which is to say a lot since the market itself was a sight to behold) was the in-store eatery, a modest though impressive little deli-style counter with a plain dining area to the side. You can order take-out, but for the full experience we opted to enjoy the ambiance and novelty of the surroundings and take in mammoth bowls of Ph and an appetizer of Vietnamese egg rolls at a little formica table-booth by the window overlooking Rivers Avenue.. The fried rolls were meaty and delicious, balanced by the simple butter lettuce offered to wrap it in a crispy blanket and some fresh cilantro, basil, and tangy yet light dipping sauce. The Ph was hearty, authentic, and all one could ever ask for in a bowl of soupy-heavenbits of tripe, rare beef and meatballs resting in a nest of tender rice noodles and a simple, clear broth with green onions-bursting with goodness. Served with fresh lime wedges, bean sprouts, cilantro, basil and table sauces of hot rooster chili sauce, soy, fish sauce and hoisinOh. My. I got a taste of the rewards of living dangerously and ordered a can of basil seed drink. It is basically flat cream soda suspended with pulpy seeds that squeak and burst between your teeth. A fun drink that was delicious over ice and made me feel like a little kid again 🙂 All in all, a glorious find, a wonderful food victory, and some of the best Ph I’ve had since San DiegoI will miss this diamond in the roughbut now I have another reason to come back to Charleston besides the scenic marshlands, warm beaches and historic downtown areathis little Asian market is a must-visit for anyone looking to add a little more spice to their palette! 🙂

Yay pho!. Love, love, love this place. The pho is very good, and the grocery is fantastic. I go here several times a month. If you go for lunch get there early and don’t expect fast food.
