Not up to snuff. Several years ago I was a regular at the Sioux Falls incarnation of Coco Palace and it was exceptionally good. Unfortunately the Sioux Falls store has closed due to the landlord out pricing the restaurant’s ability to remain profitable. Also unfortunate, is that the Rapid City version pales by comparison. Despite assurances from the owner, it quickly became apparent that the recipes and their execution, were not the same. A number of ingredients were missing from the pad kee mao and the green curry. Excessive amounts of celery were in both dishes, probably to fill the dishes with less expensive ingredients. I’m sorry to say, that I probably will not return, despite my love of Thai food.
Underwhelming, at best.. Went to Coco Palace for dinner on Saturday night with a friend. I’m familiar with the restaurant from Sioux Falls, so I was confident it would be a good experience.Nope.First of all, the restaurant was totally dead on a weekend evening at 6 p.m. Probably not a good sign. On top of that, they’re practically using the bar area as a storage facility – there were hundreds of takeout menus piled up in boxes all over the place. Our server was polite and very attentive – which given the lack of clientele, is probably a good thing. And the weather was nice on the patio. That’s about where the compliments end.I ordered panang, which on the whole could’ve been fine if it weren’t for the fact that the kitchen is obviously used frozen mixed peas and carrots for their dishes. Seriously? 12 bucks for an entree and you’re dumping frozen veggies into a curry and hoping I won’t notice? If it weren’t for the fact that my friend and I were time constrained, I would’ve sent the entree back.I guess when they’re serving one or two tables an hour for dinner on a weekend night, it’s easier to buy frozen since they’re barely going through any produce and it cuts down on waste. If they bought a two-pound bag of carrots from their vendor, they’d probably throw half of it away a week later.Do yourself a favor. The Rushmore Mall is a couple hundred yards away. Just eat at the food court.
Great food, need more servers. Coco Palace has Great food, and good prices. They have a variety of asian foods, japanese, chinese, thai korean. Just a little bit of everything. and everything I have had is very good.My only complaint is that they don’t seem to have enough servers. Two people to work as waiters for the entire restaruant. that’s just not going to work.
