Here’s a script:*I walk in and see an overcrowded bar. I get through the crowd to the back, and see a rapidly growing pool of water coming from the bathroom.*Girlfriend: is this a regular thing?Bartender: yes, actually.Me: WTF let’s go.*leave*
Inconsistent. I frequent Monks and the beer is always good. The staff and food is at times fairly terrible. Recently, I went there with a group of friends and ordered a beer and their Bruschetta. The menu said nothing about balsamic vinegar and when I received the plate, it was drenched in it. So much it burned my throat and upset my stomach. I couldn’t eat it, so I returned it to the staff who wasted no energy on trying to conceal their annoyance. They were short and didn’t have any interest in why I chose to send it back. They did remove the bruschetta from my ticket, but there was no apology. I felt like an inconvenience, not a customer. It is a great place to try lots of different beer and their Scotch eggs are a yummy and unique treat. But it can be really hit and miss with food and staff.
Good, not great. I went there at 9pm on a Monday night for a late dinner. The pros: nice ambiance, kitchen open until 10pm, decent food (although not many options for vegetarians). I got the grilled cheese and it was pretty tasty. The cons: they were out of things one would expect them to have (like diet coke) and the bartender/waiter working that evening was not particularly informative or helpful. if i had to describe him, i’d say he was the absence-of-nice. I suppose I’ve come to expect nice in South Dakota but I found the exception at Monk’s.
This place is amazing. Laid back atmosphere, outstanding beer selection. Beer nerd nirvana
Great beer selection, complimented with a good bar food. However, the bartender was rude and not attentive.
Talented staff with expert knowledge on all the FABULOUS beer they have available. The green bean fries are to die for, which I’m sure the rest of the food is…haven’t gotten past those darn fries 🙂
Thank god for Monks. This is something Sioux Falls has needed for a long time. A bar with an amazing selection of beer. The wait staff know their beer and can answer any questions you have or point you in the right direction when you are trying to pick something out. Prices on beer are good. I’ve had appetizers a few times and they were great. If they could only get Surly back….
