Strouds is a good bbq joint in Cookeville. I like bbq, so I go to several different bbq places, but Strouds is one of my regulars. Today we had BBQ Potatoes. The potatoes and bbq were hot. Unfortunately, the cheese was missing out of both boxes, and one of the cornbread muffins was completely burnt on the bottom. I love their bbq potatoes though. They also run them at a special price on Thursdays.Their bbq sandwiches are good. But if you get them on the bbq sandwich special day, Wednesday, be prepared to get a smaller sandwich. They also have good sweet tea, but it’s very sweet!

Basics. Stick to the basics when going here. Order a plain barbecue sandwich with thick sauce, beans, potato salad, etc and you can’t go wrong. You could go bun-less too (meat only). The meat is good. They have a vinegar-based thin sauce I like for that. They always are out of ribs when I try to order them Fridays and Saturdays, so I don’t know how good they are. The nachos I ordered were not good. The cheese was a semi-hard chunk instead of melted runny goodness, and the meat made some of the the chips soggy. This is preference, but I don’t think the sweet beans go well with the savory chips and cheese. There’s not much else on the menu, so I wish they could nail down those few alternative dishes they had. Bottom line, when you go here, you go for a barbecue sandwich.

I stopped by Stroud’s yesterday. I had been working in Cookeville on a job for a few days and thought I would grab a barbecue to eat on the interstate going home. I asked for a large sandwich, no slaw. Good so far. The place is clean and neat, but small. It is a diner, not a restaurant.Anyway, I got on the highway and opened my sandwich to put some sauce on it and IT HAD MAYO AND A PICKLE!! WTF???? WHO PUTS MAYO & PICKLE ON A BARBECUE SANDWICH?Ruined it for me. Pirates want their barbecue sandwiches PLAIN, and then add on from there. I won’t go back. Pretty simple joint, nothing spectacular anyway.

Best Tea in Town. I love Stroud’s Barbecue. I am a huge tea fanatic,no thanks to living in the south most of my life, and Stroud’s has the best sweet tea that I have had. It is VERY sweet so if you have sensitive teeth I would not recommend it.They do take credit/debit cards now. They do require that you make a minimum of a $5.00 purchase in order to cover the fees that the companies impose in order to use credit/debit. Wednesday’s are normally half priced pork sandwiches. My favorite day to go!
