When I came here I was expecting a touristy spot, especially since they have a whole Loveless subculture with stores & all sorts of branded stuff nearby. However, I found it honestly good southern food. The meats there were great and the drinks were excellent too. The service was extremely good as well. I got to see why they are such a famous place – there’s really nothing you can blame here. They seem to have it figured out

Where to Eat Instead Of Loveless Cafefeast.media/where-to-eat-instead-of-loveless-cafeLoveless Cafe has been a staple of the Nashville community and what I like to call the world wide community of soul food lovers, or the WWCOFS for short. Many people know this genre of food as soul food, meat and three, southern, or even comfort food. As a native of Nashville, I have been coming to Loveless since before I was born. For a while all the hype was true, Loveless was the best place to go if you want real southern food. However, more than just management changed years ago, and it hasn’t been able to restore the former quality that everyone from this town remembers. Now Loveless is busier than they ever have been and the food isn’t even half as good. Now, this next piece of information isn’t something to go spreading around to everyone you know visiting or living in Nashville. The reason this place is special is because there aren’t herds of people being bussed in to wait 45 minutes in line for cheese grits slathered in a stack of Kraft American singles to the point you feel like you’re drinking processed cheese whiz with a sprinkle of grits. You won’t feel like you are inside a chain restaurant owned by Opryland. There isn’t anyone trying to sell you merchandise while you are cooped up in the waiting area trying to decide whether or not you want to wait any longer for this food.Where you want to go instead of Loveless is a magical place on Old Hillsboro road right outside of the Nashville city limits that goes by the name Barbara’s Home Cooking. If you have been to Loveless and you first arrive at Barbaras, you will be wondering where the line is? Well, I have literally never seen a line there and they have open seating. Once you walk into this home turned restaurant, the lovely women who run the place will greet you with authentic South African accents and the warmest, densest, fluffiest, roll that has ever melted in your mouth. The menu is written on a chalkboard on the wall and almost never changes. The benefit to not having tons of options is that they are able to make everything as fresh as possible.
This place has a storied history. Weary travelers stopping off for homemade biscuits with preserves flanked by farm fresh eggs and a slab of home cured country ham. Fast forward 50 years to a soulless and shamelessly self promoting glorified Cracker Barrel, mobbed by throngs of weary millennial tourists drawn in like moths to a flame, with open mouths and open wallets. The food is good- biscuits are very reminiscent of Cracker Barrel as is the rest of their breakfast food. Was the food good? Yes. But the place inundates with merchandising as soon as you get there. It’s a tourist trap. Don’t waste your time unless the out of town guests beg you to take them.
I ordered the famous fried chicken and wasn’t impressed. It was very dry and kinda bland. Could have been an off day. The breads and jellies were great. My wife had the gizzards and they were fantastic.
We went out of our way to have breakfast at the Loveless Cafe and we were not disappointed. The best breakfast I have had in a very long time. We ordered chicken fried steak, white gravy, biscuits & gravy, grits, eggs, the works and everything was superb. Service was excellent and the manager stopped by to chat with us. If you are in the area don’t miss the chance to enjoy great southern food and hospitality.
Very kitsch – but that’s the fun of it. We followed the advice of other reviewers and ordered our food to-go and used the picnic tables – with kids and a dog and a long road trip, this was a great call. Although I was excited to get pictures with the sign and eat the country ham and the sides, the fried chicken had no flavor. It was cooked well and not greasy at all… But it really was flavorless. The kids liked their kid meals and we all enjoyed stretching our legs. Glad we can say we’ve been to this little piece of history, but I won’t necessarily put it on my list of go-back-to’s.
