Best BBQ I ever had, place was small and loud on a Friday night as expected, my waitress was sweet, but the lady upfront was not pleasant and seemed annoyed to be there…def a place to go to take out! But beware that their to go orders are backed up!
Ate with a large group of my coworker’s and the Commissary was very accommodating. They sat us at a huge table and took care of us all with ease. I had the BBQ baked potato and it was HUGE!!! Great meat and melted cheese all over the place. I saved room for dessert, thanks to the handy-dandy to-go tray!! I had the lemon icebox pie and I would push my own grandmother over to get another slice. It was that good. Thanks for opening up another location so I can experience this great food again…and again…and again!

As someone who frequently goes to Memphis, I have tried numerous BBQ places. Every local has their opinion on the best place, and maybe as an outsider it isn’t my place to weigh-in, but I’ll do it anyway. The Germantown Commissary isn’t the best BBQ, in my opinion, but it’s pretty good. They claim to be the inventors of the BBQ nachos, so I tried that. A plate-engulfing pile of cheesy BBQ goodness would be an accurate description of what I was served. It was huge, definitely enough for two meals. This was on a Saturday night and the wait was 45 minutes, so come early or order takeout if you don’t want to wait.
This was our first visit to Germantown Commissary. It’s a tiny place with a tiny parking lot – so just be aware. The staff members are super friendly. My husband ordered a pulled pork sandwich with beans and slaw. I ordered a salad topped with pulled pork. We both enjoyed the smoky pork. My husband also really liked his sides. The regular barbeque sauce is good, but I didn’t care for the hotter version. If you like hotter sauces – not spicier, just more heat – then you may like the hotter version. We had recently eaten at Memphis Barbeque Company in Southaven and couldn’t resist comparing the two restaurants. While we enjoyed both restaurants and would recommend both, we liked the meat and sauces at Memphis Barbeque Co more. The pork was just a little more tender and flavorful. The sauces just a little more flavorful and unique. We would definitely recommend Germantown Commissary if you are in the area.
How does one write a review of such an outstanding Memphis BBQ joint (and I mean JOINT) without making an Elvis joke? It’s easy. Elvis is dead. But this place is hopping and some of the best eats I’ve had. How can you go wrong with a jumbo pulled pork sandwich smothered in slaw, with a SIDE of slaw, a bowl of beans with as much meat in it as the sandwich (slight exaggeration, but close) and a deviled egg that redefines the whole deviled egg genre? In Memphis? This is the spot. And I hear on Mondays it’s ALL YOU CAN EAT ribs. I need to plan my travels better, it seems.
Sooo YUM! I ordered a rack of ribs and their jumbo pulled pork sandwhich. Both were delicious! The pork so was so juicy and the coleslaw perfectly complemented the BBQ sauce’s bite. The ribs were pretty good as well, but I wish they would have been a bit more tender. It wasn’t the fall off the bones that I imagined. Nonetheless, the food was fantastic. I will definitely be back.Price is average for BBQ, sauces are delicious, pulled pork is fantastic, and the portions are decent (if you eat a lot, then their listed portions may be a bit small). Definitely worth trying!
